A Mecca Bingo venue in Devon is at risk of closing next month as it is not “commercially viable”.

The bingo hall on North Street in Exeter is coming to the end of the lease and requires “significant maintenance” making it harder to sustain operations.

A spokesperson for Mecca told DevonLive the decision to close the venue is “difficult” but “we are working hard to ensure we have a sustainable estate of vibrant community clubs”.

The Mecca venue in Taunton in Somerset is also at risk, the spokesperson added.

Mecca is currently consulting with members of staff affected by the proposed closure and a final decision about the future of the venues is expected to be made in early June.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Mecca Bingo said: “The proposed closures relate to venues that have not been commercially viable for some time.

“Our leases on both Exeter and Taunton are reaching an end and both venues require significant maintenance, which makes it challenging for them to remain open.

“These are difficult decisions, but we are working hard to ensure we have a sustainable estate of vibrant community clubs.

“We are currently in consultation with affected colleagues and will advise our team and our customers once a final decision is reached early next month.”
