Over 100 firefighters are currently battling a major fire in Rutherglen this evening. Multiple road closures are in place, with members of the public asked to avoid the area.

The blaze broke out inside a shop on Baronald Street at around 6.19pm this evening, May 7. Now, 22 fire appliances and additional resources are on scene, as well as Police Scotland officers.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the air, with drivers over the M74 reporting sightings.

Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed. And the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging nearby residents to close their windows and doors.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Over 100 firefighters are currently tackling a fire on Baronald Street in Rutherglen.

“We were alerted at 6.19pm on Thursday, 7 May, to reports of a building fire.

“Operations Control have mobilised 22 fire appliances and additional resources to the scene of the fire which is affecting a commercial building.

“Crews remain at the scene.

“Nearby residents are asked to close windows and doors as a precautionary measure, and people are asked to stay clear of the area.”

An update from Police Scotland reads: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a shop premises in Baronald Street, Rutherglen which was reported at 6.40pm on Thursday, 7 May, 2026.

“Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We are also unaware of any reported casualties.
