Lambeth election results are coming in for all 63 seats on the council. Before the 2026 election, the South London borough council was run by Labour, which held a very strong majority of 54 seats. Each ward is represented by either two or three councillors.
Lambeth paused counting overnight after announcing results in 16 wards, with the London borough saying “due to close results, a number of recounts are required” and they would return in the morning to resume.
The Greens won 21 of the seats declared, with Labour on 12 and the Liberal Democrats on seven, meaning the Greens needed another 11 of the 23 yet to be announced to take control of the council.
Lambeth wards up for grabs include Brixton Acre Lane, Brixton North, Brixton Rush Common, Brixton Windrush, Clapham Common and Abbeville, Clapham East, Clapham Park, Clapham Town, Gipsy Hill, Herne Hill and Loughborough Junction, Kennington, Knight’s Hill, Myatt’s Fields, Oval, St Martin’s, Stockwell East, Stockwell West and Larkhall, Streatham Common and Vale, Streatham Hill East, Streatham Hill West and Thornton, Streatham St Leonard’s, Streatham Wells, Vauxhall, Waterloo and South Bank, and West Dulwich.
During the last local election in Lambeth in 2022, 58 Labour councillors were elected, while the Lib Dems won three seats and the Greens won two.
Since then, the Greens gained two more councillors after winning a by-election in May 2025 and after a suspended Labour councillor went on to join the Greens. Another councillor who was suspended by Labour now sits as an independent while another Labour councillor defected to the Lib Dems in November 2025.
Professor Tony Travers, of the London School of Economics, said it was possible that Labour could lose overall control at the local elections – though he said it was “hard to imagine” them not being the biggest party.
He told the BBC: “Lambeth is currently strongly Labour-held, but with threats from the Liberal Democrats in some parts of the borough, particularly for example Oval, but elsewhere the Greens are likely to win seats from Labour as well.”
According to the latest polls from More in Common, Lambeth is one of several inner-London boroughs which could see a “two-way fight” between Labour and the Greens.
