FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) – Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that London Mayor Randall Weddle has been indicted.
Coleman announced that a Laurel County Grand Jury indicted Weddle on Tuesday for two counts campaign contribution restriction/expenditure limits (Class D Felony) in connection with contributions to the Andy Beshear for Governor campaign during one election and for two counts of Campaign Contribution Restriction/Expenditure Limits (Class D Felony) in connection with contributions to the Kentucky Democratic Party in one year.
The indictment says there were a total of 24 donations to the Beshear for governor campaign And the Kentucky Democratic Party. The indictment alleges Weddle used his personal credit card and reported the donations under other people’s names. The different counts focusing on donations made on December 27 2022 and December 30 2022.
When WKYT first contacted Randall Weddle about the indictment, he told us that he had not been informed.
Weddle’s attorney, J. Guthrie True of Frankfort, provided the following statements to WKYT.
“I am deeply disappointed the AG would surreptitiously seek an indictment based on public records that are three years old. These errors were reported by the mayor, and the contributions were fully refunded.”
“It is particularly disturbing that they’re seeking an indictment six weeks before an election.”
“We found yesterday morning that agents were fanned out around the county serving subpoenas to various people. None of those served were called to testify this morning and it was the testimony of two agents that secured the indictment.”
“There’s no question that this is politically motivated”
“It is particularly ironic that the people who scream about “election interference” are now using it themselves”
Weddle will be arraigned in Laurel County Circuit Court on April 15 at 9 a.m.
