A thief has been banned from entering all Tesco stores in Derby for three years.
Bailey Esmonde, 22, is now prohibited from entering the shops or remaining on the commercial premises when asked to leave by staff or police until May 13, 2029.
The Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) was imposed after Esmonde entered the Tesco Express shop on St Peter’s Street on March 30 and left with two cans of cider without paying.
Two days later, on April 1, he was arrested for being in possession of a wrap of cocaine.
Officers checked CCTV footage from Tesco and identified him as the thief.
Esmonde, of no fixed abode, was charged with shop theft and possession of crack cocaine.
He pleaded guilty to both charges during an appearance at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on April 2.
He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and made to pay compensation for the theft of the alcohol.
This wasn’t Esmonde’s first CBO, as he was previously the subject of one in 2024, when he admitted to stealing a can of Monster energy drink, two packets of sandwiches, a bag of crisps and a bag of chicken bites from Tesco Express on London Road, Alvaston.
He was originally banned from entering just that store, but following his theft in March this year, officers extended the order to ban Esmonde from all Tesco stores in Derby.
The order was granted during a hearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on May 14.
A CBO can be issued by any criminal court against a person who has been convicted of an offence.
It can be used to tackle the most persistent antisocial individuals who are also engaged in criminal activity.
