Doosan Enerbility (034020.KS) has formed a partnership to supply small modular reactor (SMR) equipment to Britain’s Rolls-Royce SMR and has entered the product manufacturing verification stage.
Doosan Enerbility, a unit of Doosan (000150.KS), said Tuesday that it has been selected as a strategic partner for the manufacturing of key equipment for projects pursued by Rolls-Royce SMR.
Founded in 2021, Rolls-Royce SMR is an SMR developer whose largest shareholder is Rolls-Royce PLC, the British aerospace and defense company. The company is currently developing a 470-megawatt (MW) class SMR capable of providing stable baseload power for more than 60 years.
With this partner selection, Doosan Enerbility will conduct manufacturability reviews for major equipment, including the reactor, to be applied to SMR projects underway in Wylfa, the United Kingdom, and Temelín, the Czech Republic. In April, Rolls-Royce SMR signed a contract with Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N), the UK’s state-owned nuclear agency, and began site-specific design work for three SMRs to be built at Wylfa. In the Czech Republic, the company signed a construction preparation contract with state-owned energy firm ČEZ and is currently conducting site licensing and pre-design work for the Temelín site.
A manufacturability review refers to the process of verifying whether a designed product can actually be built. It allows Rolls-Royce SMR to confirm that it can confidently entrust equipment production to Doosan Enerbility before full-scale transactions begin.
