Susan Ryall, of Garsdale, near Sedbergh, was banned from driving for 20 months on December 18 last year for drink driving.

The 59-year-old was caught behind the wheel of her Citroën Berlingo Panel van on Jingling Lane in Kirkby Lonsdale, with 72 micrograms of alcohol in her system.

Just over one month later, South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard she was caught driving a Fiat Doblo van by PC Thompson on Station Road on the A683 in Sedbergh at 11am on January 28.

“Officers followed the defendant after checks on her system revealed she was driving with no insurance,” prosecutor Peter Kelly said.

“It became apparent she was disqualified from driving.

“She told officers she was tending to her animals.”

Ryall pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle without third party insurance when she appeared in court on March 30.

In mitigation, defence solicitor Andy Gallagher said: “The defendant owns livestock. She was stuck between a rock and a hard place when attending to sheep who were a distance away from her address.

“The livestock have been moved to a field she has been able to rent nearer to her home. She now has assistance from a driver.”

Magistrates sentenced Ryall to a 12-month community order with one requirement of completing 160 hours of unpaid work.

She also received an additional 23-month ban as well as £85 in court costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
