The Greenfield subway station (which Londoners proudly call “The Tube”) used to get flooded a lot. When heavy rain hit this part of west London, water could overwhelm the local drainage system and leave the area around the Tube station a soggy mess. Sandbags and conventional flood measures helped, but only so much.
Then, in October 2023, a family of five Eurasian beavers was released into Paradise Fields, a 20-acre nature reserve near the station. Within weeks, they had dammed a creek, spread water into new channels and helped turn a former golf course into a wetland. Where the golf course did little for the environment, the wetland stores water, shelters wildlife, and importantly, acts like a buffer against flooding.
“They effectively turned this site into a giant sponge that can take heavy rainfall and slowly release water back into the landscape, creating a lot more resilience for flooding,” explains Sean McCormack, a local veterinarian who started the Ealing Beaver Project, named for the London borough of Ealing, where it’s located.
Now, the UK is carrying out several other beaver experiments, releasing the furry engineers into key areas where they can make a difference. Britain is increasingly considering returning control of some wet landscapes to their original managers.
These Engineers Have Teeth
Beavers once lived across Britain, shaping rivers, ponds and wetlands for thousands of years. Humans hunted them to extinction more than 400 years ago, mainly for their fur, meat and castoreum, a secretion used historically in perfumes and medicines.
At the time, people didn’t really think about the environmental impact of what they were doing. As was so often the case, the only concern was immediate economic gain. But when they eliminated the beavers, they removed an entire process.
Beavers, as we know, like to build dams. They do this to raise water levels not to help humans, but to protect themselves. These dams let them swim safely, hide from predators, and reach food. But beavers also don’t really think about their environmental impact.
The beaver dams slow streams and create ponds that trap sediments. As the water faces resistance, it usually spreads sideways. Their tree-felling opens the canopy, letting light reach the ground. In the right place, a narrow channel can become a messy wetland full of insects, amphibians, birds and fish.
That mess is exactly the point.

Modern Britain has spent centuries doing the opposite: straightening rivers, draining marshes, compacting soils and building on floodplains. These changes make catchments “flashier,” meaning rainfall runs quickly downstream instead of soaking into the landscape. Climate change is adding pressure by making heavy rainfall more intense and erratic. The beavers’ management slows down floods and can prevent their worst effects.

Beavers Really Make a Difference
The classic example in Britain comes, funnily enough, from a river named Otter. Beavers appeared seemingly out of nowhere on the River Otter in around 2008. To this day, it’s not clear where the beavers came from. They could have escaped from somewhere or were deliberately released in a “covert” release.
In 2014, video evidence showed that the beavers were surviving and actually breeding. The government’s initial plan was to remove them, but the Devon Wildlife Trust, an environmental NGO, pushed back. They proposed a five-year scientific trial instead. Let’s see if the beavers are good for the environment first.
The trial ran from 2015 to 2020. The beavers were health-screened, confirmed as Eurasian beavers, and released under an official licence. They could establish territories along the River Otter and its tributaries. The work was led by Devon Wildlife Trust with researchers from the University of Exeter, as well as a few consultancy firms.
The beavers did what beavers do: they slowed water, raised water tables, built ponds and created messier, wetter habitat. For wildlife, that meant more varied wetland niches. For people, the most important effect was flood management. Researchers found that beaver wetlands could hold water back during heavy rain, reducing peak flows downstream. University of Exeter researchers found that beaver-created wetlands on the River Otter were storing more than 24 million litres of water and reducing storm flows by an average of 30% during heavy rainfall. The benefits extend beyond floods. Beaver wetlands can hold water during dry spells, helping streams keep flowing in summer. They can also trap pollutants and sediment washed off of agricultural fields.

There were conflicts too. Beavers can flood fields and fell trees, which can cause issues for local landowners. But the Devon trial showed those problems could often be managed with local advice and careful, targeted intervention.
The beavers were allowed to mind their business, and the trial was so successful that English authorities developed a formal framework through which beavers can be released in the wild. This happened in 2025, and already, beaver experiments are multiplying.
In Cornwall, the southwestern part of England, Cornwall Wildlife Trust released two pairs of beavers on the course of two rivers. Right off the bat, the newly released animals teamed up to build a dam, which was exactly the plan. This was the first official beaver release license, mentions Marian Spain, Chief Executive of Natural England, the public body responsible for these licenses.
“We are delighted to have approved the first licenced wild beaver release by Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the latest in a growing network of responsible, well-planned reintroductions across the region with the potential to make a huge difference to nature recovery. The successful return of beavers depends on well-planned, collaborative projects built on engagement and trust, and we are committed to getting it right for both nature and communities.”
Another legal release happened in 2026, when a family of beavers was released into two sites across the historic Holnicote Estate on Exmoor.
But perhaps the most intriguing case is in London.
Urban Beavers
It’s one thing to get beavers to do their thing in a remote valley or a forest, and it’s another to do it beside the hustle and bustle of one of Europe’s largest cities.
It didn’t happen all at once.
In March 2022, the city council in Enfield, large town in north London, released a pair of beavers into a large, managed enclosure. This brought beavers back to the capital for the first time in about 400 years. The project was designed as another practical test of urban natural flood management. Yet again, the beavers got to it, building dams and raising water levels inside their enclosure, creating a flooding buffer. The beavers seem to be thriving and are also producing offspring.


So, the Ealing Beaver Project pushed the idea further. In October 2023, a family of five Eurasian beavers was released at Paradise Fields in Greenford, not far from the flood-prone Tube station we mentioned at the start of the article. Here too, the beavers were placed in a large (10-hectare) wetland enclosure.

The Ealing Beaver Project describes itself as the UK’s first fully urban beaver enclosure. Even in this environment, the animals began building their own infrastructure. Within months, they had built several small dams, holding more water inside Paradise Fields and slowing its movement downstream. The project says Greenford Station has remained flood-free during periods of heavy rain since the beavers began altering the site.
Officials were considering expensive, complex engineering solutions; nature had a much simpler option. Yes, their dams are messy, but they create ponds that store water, opening up the habitat and greatly limiting flooding. Plus, in addition to the habitat and engineering benefits, there’s another advantage.
Win-Win-Win Situation
At Paradise Fields, the animals also became a public-facing rewilding project. People can walk through parts of the site, join guided tours and see the marks of beaver activity: chewed trunks, pooled water, new channels and gnawed branches. The project has reported wider social benefits too, including lower antisocial behaviour on the site and stronger local interest in urban wildlife.
The beavers have also reproduced. In 2024, at least two kits were born at Paradise Fields. Although they’re still not free-roaming, this large enclosure has become a functioning family territory.
London is now looking for other places where beavers might help. Croydon Council is exploring a proposal to introduce a family to South Norwood Country Park, which it says will improve biodiversity, water quality and flood resilience. If surveys, funding and licences line up, the animals could arrive there in 2028.
That expansion pushes the London beavers debate even further, asking a key question: can rewilding work where people actually live?
So far, the answer seems to be yes — but only with planning, fencing, monitoring and local support. Beavers can be rewilded and free-roaming in natural sites, whereas in the capital, they can’t be left to roam freely through every river. They are being placed in carefully chosen sites where their engineering can help absorb rain, restore wetlands and give city residents a close view of an animal that vanished from Britain centuries ago.
In that sense, London has become a test case for a broader future. The beaver is no longer just a rural conservation story. It is becoming part of the urban climate toolkit.

For a country facing heavier rainfall, summer droughts and mounting flood-defense costs, beavers could turn out to be a remarkably useful solution. Granted, they won’t save every village or Tube station from flooding, nor can they replace engineered defences.
But in the right catchments, with careful management and proper support, beavers can repair part of the water system while making it wilder. They can offer benefits for both nature and local communities.
After centuries of absence, Britain is not just bringing back an animal. It is bringing back a landscape function — one that we almost forgot about.
