Lloyds customers are being warned about 59 bank branches due to close across the UK this year. Sites in the North East are also included in the following list, alongside their dates of closure.
According to consumer group Which?, Lloyds Banking Group has already closed more than 1,547 branches between 2015 and June 2026. The latest closures form part of an ongoing trend across the UK banking sector, as more customers move towards online and mobile banking services.
The bank said that more than three-quarters of the branches affected by this latest wave of closures are located within one mile of another Lloyds branch, while 95% have an alternative branch available within five miles. Customers can also use branches across the group’s different brands. For instance, Halifax customers can carry out everyday banking transactions at Lloyds Bank branches, and vice versa, where services are available. A Lloyds spokesperson told MoneyWeek: “With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before.” Lloyds is far from the only bank massively reducing its physical network.
Which? estimates that around 6,693 bank branches across the UK closed between January 2015 and January 2026, with major high street names including Santander, Barclays and NatWest all announcing significant closures in recent years, reports the Express. Campaigners have repeatedly raised concerns that ongoing branch closures could leave elderly customers, small businesses and those living in rural communities with fewer face-to-face banking options, despite the expansion of digital services and alternative banking hubs.

Earlier this year, ChronicleLive reported that Lloyds Banking Group was considering phasing out Halifax, which could mark the end of the 173-year-old brand. According to reports, Lloyds was expected to announce the discontinuation of Halifax as a standalone brand this summer. However, no decisions had been made yet regarding the brand’s future, which issued its first mortgage in 1853.
A spokeswoman for Lloyds said: “We regularly look at the role our brands play in supporting our customers. Our banking customers can already use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, and see any of their products and services in any of their apps – there are no changes for our customers today.” Here are more details.
