National Grid released cooling tips ahead of an expected heat wave.
ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT)- National Grid says simple changes at home can cut summer energy use and help customers lower their bills during hot weather.
In a press release, National Grid urged customers in Upstate New York to lower thermostats carefully, close blinds and use other low-cost steps as heat and humidity build. The utility said air conditioning accounts for 12% of a home’s electricity use during summer.
The press release said about three-quarters of sunlight hitting a double-paned window enters a home as heat, citing the U.S. Department of Energy. National Grid also said summer cooling assistance programs are available for income-qualified customers.

National Grid recommended replacing air filters, clearing air intake vents and checking the seal on window air conditioners to keep cool air from escaping. The utility also said LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
The company said programmable or smart thermostats can save as much as 10% on annual electric cooling bills. It also advised customers leaving for vacation to turn up the thermostat and unplug electronics with remote-control or instant-on features, which can save about $4 a month.
What to do in heat?
National Grid said keeping a thermostat at a steady setting can help control costs, and Cornell Cooperative Extension says customers can save 3-5% on summertime energy bills for every degree they raise the temperature. The press release said a 75-degree setting costs between 9-15% more than a 78-degree setting.
The utility also advised running fans with air conditioning, turning off unused lights, keeping interior doors open, closing window coverings and avoiding oven use when possible. It said customers should delay using dishwashers and laundry machines until morning or overnight, when possible.
National Grid said customers who meet Home Energy Assistance Program income rules or receive qualifying government benefits may also qualify for its Energy Affordability Program, which provides a monthly bill credit.
