Police presence at County Road protest
A group of around 50 anti immigration protestors gathered on County Road this afternoon outside the Royal Oak pub while a large police presence, including mounted officers with horses wearing riot gear gathered to meet them.
The far-right protestors began to assemble in dribs and drabs throughout the morning ahead of a planned march setting off from the Royal Oak. The pub remained closed with the doors locked ahead of the protest.
The protestors, a mix of middle aged men and younger men wearing black baseball caps and black sportswear, continued to mill about in the area before setting off down County Road towards Liverpool city centre at about 1pm.
They were confronted by three counter protestors over the road. Retired social worker Silé Macraghnaill, 72, told the Echo that the local community is ‘fed up’ with scenes such as these.
The marchers chanted ‘left-wing scum off our streets’ at the counter-protestors. One demonstrator unfurled a St George’s Flag with the words ‘Send them back’ written in black marker pen across it as the march began.
Children continued to play on nearby streets. Shoppers continued to go about their business on County Road, seemingly paying little head to the protest.
Spellow Lane Library, which was set on fire during a riot on County Road in the summer of 2024, remained shuttered, as did the Thomas Frost Wetherspoon pub.
The marchers headed toward Liverpool city centre, chanting slogans and seemingly intent on taking their protest to St George’s Hall, surrounded by police.
