Businesses and homes were reportedly evacuated with roads cordoned off amid what is understood to be an ‘explosives’-related incident in Glossop on Sunday (July 5)
Multiple police cars were seen along High Street West following the incident which is thought to have occurred nearby on Chapel Street. Witnesses reported that local residents along with nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated by emergency crews after the alarm was raised.
One man who found the item while gardening said the incident was escalated by emergency crews with explosives specialists also called out to the scene. It has been suggested the item was a ‘world war two’ device.

Derbyshire Constabulary later confirmed ordnance, believed to be from the second world war, was discovered and that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit teams had been dispatched to the scene to assess it.

Louis Ashurst, who found the item, told the M.E.N: “Myself and my partner Tom were doing some gardening and spotted the object. It was just under the surface.
“We were curious as to what the item was, so I ran it through Grok and it told me to report it due to its shape.

“A first responder came within ten minutes to look at the object. He escalated it and was ordered to provide a 100m perimeter. We are now awaiting MOD to inspect it.”
Pictures shared on social media showed police vehicles blocking the main high street, popular with bars and restaurants, as members of the public watched on.
“On Chapel Street our street have been evacuated and surrounding area,” one person commented on social media. “It’s in someone’s garden!! I heard all sirens going,” posted another.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: “A cordon is in place in Glossop town centre following an unexploded piece of what is believed to be WW2 ordnance found in the garden of a property in Chapel Street today (5 July).
“A number of homes have ben evacuated in the area as a precaution while we await the arrival of the Army’s bomb disposal team at the scene.
“Anyone who has not been spoken to directly by officers does not require evacuation at this time and further information will be passed as soon as we have it.”
