The UK’s favourite supermarket has been crowned and no, it’s not M&S or Aldi, as you might expect.

While it often claims to be the nation’s favourite supermarket, Tesco has been crowned Britain’s favourite at The Grocer Gold Awards.

And you might be surprised to learn this is the grocery giant’s 10th victory in a row at these awards.

It came out on top in a survey of nearly 15,000 respondents from NIQ’s Homescan Consumer Panel, with customers citing its Clubcard Prices and strong everyday low pricing offers as key selling points.

The food retailer also claimed The Grocer of the Year award for its ‘value, innovation and insight’.

It achieved its highest market share for more than a decade at 28.7%, while critics said Tesco was ‘a great, well-run machine of a business’.

The Clubcard offering had been previously criticised for not allowing anyone under the age of 18 to sign up to the scheme, although in June this year the supermarket did make an effort to remedy this.

It launched a card for 16 and 17 year olds but this could only be used if their parent or guardian already had a Clubcard account.

But this winning title doesn’t mean Tesco doesn’t have some stiff competition.

When it comes to the Which? annual survey, it’s M&S which has been dubbed the nation’s favourite supermarket for the past five years, including 2026.

Customers praised its high quality of products and saying it’s got the ‘best’ food that ‘never lets them down’, as well as giving it a 78% customer score, making it the UK’s highest-rated in-store supermarket.

It’s been setting trends with TikTok inspired food releases such as the limited-edition Shake-A-Cucumber pots. And let’s not forget it revived its Wimbledon-inspired strawberry sandwich this year with a new and more expensive version, the Chocolate, Strawberry & Pistachio Creme Sandwich.

In this survey, Tesco, came in joint-second place with Aldi, with an overall score of 76%.

The retailer received four out of five stars for customer service, store appearance, product range and overall quality, and did not score below three stars in any category, including value for money.

Shoppers loved Tesco’s balance between price, quality and range, with many highlighting savings through Clubcard discounts. One shopper said: ‘Prices are high everywhere, Clubcard is the deciding factor.’

Price was where M&S stumbled, with many shoppers complaining it isn’t affordable enough.

It scored just two stars in the value for money category, with customers branding it a destination for ‘occasional treats’ as opposed to a full weekly shop.

And of course, this is where Aldi thrives, with the supermarket earning the title of Britain’s cheapest supermarket for six months in a row.

For 95 items you could expect to pay an average price of £163.34, compared to £200.63 at Tesco, while Ocado (which stocks M&S goods) will set you back £214.72 for the same shop.
