Global shareholder activism accelerated in Q2, led by elevated US campaigns and a slight uptick in APAC and Europe activity. Our Investment Banking Corporate Finance Advisory team also notes an increasing focus on AI disruption, with record campaign concentration in the Industrials & Technology sectors. Q2 also saw a shift in demands, while a quieter proxy season resulted in fewer board seats won.

Global shareholder activism accelerated in H1 2026, with a busy Q2 pushing activity ahead of last year’s elevated pace. While overall volumes increased, the defining shift was in where activists are focusing and how they are engaging with companies.
1. Global shareholder activism campaign volumes increased in Q2
A total of 136 campaigns launched globally in the first half of 2026, compared with 130 in H1 2025, as momentum continued to build, defying the typical post‑nomination window slowdown.
Activity remained led by the US, which accounted for 68 campaigns, representing half of global activity. Momentum picked up in APAC, supported by Japan’s AGM season, while Europe recorded 14 campaigns in Q2, tied for the busiest quarter in 8 quarters, albeit still below recent-year averages.

Sector concentration intensified as a record 52% of campaigns targeted Industrials and Technology companies. Activists are increasingly focused on companies exposed to AI disruption, spanning both direct adopters and those tied to enabling infrastructure.

2. Shareholder activists increasingly demand M&A
Campaign demands also shifted meaningfully in the second quarter. M&A demands accelerated 63% quarter-over-quarter and represented the most prevalent demand in H1, driven by a robust capital markets environment. Activists have shown a greater willingness to pursue strategic transactions, with more than half of M&A demands calling for companies to explore a sale.

Fewer unique activists have been active so far this year. 72 unique activists launched campaigns in H1 2026, well below the four-year average of 97, with the top 10 activists accounting for 41% of all campaigns.
3. A quieter US proxy season resulted in fewer board seat wins
Board seats won by activists declined to 71 in H1, down 17% year-on-year, as a quieter US proxy season and fewer settlements reduced opportunities to secure representation.

Against this backdrop, legal and regulatory developments continue to shape the operating environment and how companies engage with activists in the periods ahead.
