‘Many people still depend on face-to-face banking, particularly older residents’
Councillors Gareth Probert and Alan Davies have written to Lloyds Banking Group chief executive Charlie Nunn calling on the bank to reconsider plans to shut its Mostyn Street branch.
Llandudno councillors have urged Lloyds Banking Group to reverse its decision to close its branch in the Victorian resort, warning the move would be a major blow to residents, businesses, and the town centre. Councillors Gareth Probert and Alan Davies have written to Lloyds Banking Group chief executive Charlie Nunn calling on the bank to reconsider plans to shut its Mostyn Street branch.
The pair argue that while banking habits have changed, face-to-face banking remains vital in one of North Wales’ busiest towns. The Lloyds branch at 22 Mostyn Street will close on 28 October 2026.
Councillors Probert and Davies, both of Reform, issued a joint statement on the matter. ” Llandudno is one of North Wales’ most important towns and deserves to retain access to proper banking services. This isn’t simply about one bank branch – it’s about supporting our residents, protecting local businesses, and maintaining confidence in our high street,” they said. “Many people still depend on face-to-face banking, particularly older residents and those who need help with more complex financial matters. Online banking and the Post Office simply cannot replace the services provided by a full bank branch.
They added: “We recognise that Lloyds Banking Group has commercial decisions to make, but we believe it also has a responsibility to the communities that have supported it for generations. We hope the bank will listen to local concerns, reconsider this decision and work with us to find a solution that safeguards banking services in Llandudno.”
A Lloyds Banking Group spokeswoman said: “Since 2025, our customers have been able to bank in person at any of our branches – this means people can also use our Halifax branch in Llandudno, which is located within a very short walk of the Lloyds, on the same street.
“Alongside other local banking options like our Community Bankers, the nearby Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before.”
