Changing wind directions means local wildfires may be affecting North Wales communities previously untroubled by smoke, the first service has advised.
This could be compounded by smoke from other wildfires outside the region.
Using Met Office forecasts, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service warned smoke could become ‘more noticeable’ tomorrow (Wednesday).
Mark Jat, NWFRS service delivery manager and chair of the Tactical Coordination Group, said:
Looking forward to this evening and tomorrow, I’d like to remind residents that due to changes in wind direction throughout the day, smoke may continue to affect areas that have not previously been impacted. As temperatures drop, especially overnight and during the early morning, smoke can settle into lower-lying areas and become more noticeable. This is expected and does not necessarily indicate that the fire has worsened.
If you are affected by smoke, you should shelter indoors and keep windows and doors closed. Once the smoke has cleared, properties should be ventilated by reopening windows and doors.
Thanking everyone involved in fighting the fires, and those supporting them, Mark urged continued vigilance in the countryside to prevent further fires breaking out.
Activities that shouldn’t be carried out include lighting open fires, controlled burning and using disposable barbecues. Cigarettes and smoking materials should always be disposed of safely.
