Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned Saturday that Britain would become a “definite and legitimate target” if it supports the United States in any future war with Tehran, according to Iran’s state broadcaster.
An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson said any country, including Britain and Gulf states, that backs the United States in a conflict with Iran would be considered a legitimate target. The spokesperson also claimed U.S. bombers recently used British military airfields, according to IRIB.
The warning comes after Britain allowed the United States to use RAF Fairford in England and the joint U.S.-British base at Diego Garcia for what the British government described as “specific and limited defensive purposes” to destroy Iranian missiles and launchers. British officials have said requests for U.S. use of British bases are considered on a case-by-case basis.
The British government said its decision was based on the collective self-defense of longstanding allies and the protection of British lives. U.S. Air Force B-1 bombers have operated from RAF Fairford during the conflict.
Britain has repeatedly said it is not a direct participant in offensive military operations against Iran, while emphasizing it will defend British personnel, bases and interests in the region if threatened.
Iran has repeatedly warned that countries allowing the United States to use their territory or military facilities could face retaliation, raising concerns the conflict could expand beyond Washington and Tehran.
