Hundreds of customers across the UK have reported problems with making online payments using banks including HSBC, Lloyds and Barclays.
Beginning around midday on Monday, people attempting to make transfers from these banks, as well as Monzo and Halifax, reported difficulties on the Downdetector website. Reports spiked at around four in the afternoon, with over 1,000 cumulative reports of payments issues.
The issue did not appear to be with the banks themselves, but the payments infrastructure that underpins inter-bank transfers in the country.
Replying to a comment on social media, a Lloyds spokesperson wrote: “We’re investigating an issue affecting Faster Payments, which may cause delays. If you’ve already made a payment, please don’t send it again. Check it has gone through first to avoid duplicate payments.”
Monzo said in a statement that “We’re sorry for any trouble you’re currently having with transfers. We’re aware of an issue that is temporarily causing issues. We’re currently working on a fix to get us back up and running, as soon as possible. Thanks for bearing with us in the meantime.”
The Faster Payments System is the UK’s real-time gross payments settlement system and is widely used in the country as a faster alternative to BACS or CHAPS for individual transactions.
Pay.UK, the operator of the system, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Tuesday, Pay.UK reported that Direct Debit, also under its remit, processed 5 billion transactions in 2025, its highest ever. their data also found that the service had a 96 per cent satisfaction rate and was offered to customers by 94 per cent of banks and FinTechs.
