The M62 is set to be closed for a total of 41 nights amid major bridge works set to take place between May and August.

The motorway will be completely shut in both directions from 8pm between junction 22 for Denshaw, Oldham and junction 24 for Huddersfield and will re-open again at 6am for the essential works to take place.

National Highways said safety work is taking place Scammonden Bridge, which crosses over the busy motorway from April 20 until October. The existing aluminium parapet is due to be replaced with a steel one to keep the structure safe.

The bridge carries the B6114 road over the motorway between junctions 23 and 22. The B6114 will be closed to the public throughout the works, with diversions due to be put in place.

For the work to be carried out, the M62 will be closed on weekday nights between May 12 and May 27, June 19 and July 9, and August 6 and August 25. This is for a total of 41 nights.

During the closures, traffic will be diverted from junction 22 via the A672, A58, A646, A629 and then back onto the M62 at junction 24.

A National Highways statement added: “Scammonden Bridge carries the B6114 over the M62 between junctions 23 (Outlane) and 22 (Rockingstone Moss) in Calderdale. It’s also known as Rainbow Bridge. Our upgrades are vital to the long term safety and integrity of this structure.

“Plan ahead. Delays are expected. Please allow extra time and follow the signed diversion routes rather than sat nav directions.”
