{"id":100386,"date":"2026-08-09T23:53:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T23:53:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/100386\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T23:53:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T23:53:24","slug":"womens-800-meters-in-the-spotlight-as-britain-hosts-european-championships-for-1st-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/100386\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s 800 meters in the spotlight as Britain hosts European championships for 1st time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) \u2014 Shy as a kid, Audrey Werro took her dad&#8217;s advice before races that \u201cI have to be a lion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The 22-year-old Swiss star, who uses a lion&#8217;s roar celebration, will be in the spotlight at the European championships when she&#8217;s expected to line up against Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol in the highly anticipated women&#8217;s 800 meters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Britain&#8217;s Hodgkinson is the reigning Olympic champion and Dutch star Broeders-Bol has impressed in her first year in the 800 after switching from the 400-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, Werro in late June ran the third-fastest women&#8217;s time ever: 1 minute, 53.80 seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The women&#8217;s 800 world record of 1:53:28 was set in 1983 by Jarmila Kratochvilova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cThe goal is to win the medal,\u201d Werro said Sunday at a press conference at Alexander Stadium ahead of the seven-day European championships. \u201cI don\u2019t know if the race will be fast or it will be a tactical race. I don&#8217;t have the world record now in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The final is Friday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Swedish pole vaulter Armand \u201cMondo\u201d Duplantis sounds as if he&#8217;s fully recovered from a thigh issue that forced him to stop competing at the London Diamond League meet just over three weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The two-time reigning Olympic champion told the BBC that he&#8217;s eager for another world record. He wants one \u201clike, yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">In March, the Louisiana-born Duplantis broke the world record for a 15th time. When he&#8217;s not breaking records, the part-time crooner is making them too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The men&#8217;s pole vault final is next Sunday on the final evening of the competition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen is set to make his return from surgery on his left Achilles tendon when he lines up in the 5,000 meters on Monday night. The 25-year-old Norwegian had surgery in early 2026 to clean up scar tissue on the protective sheath around the tendon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Ingebrigtsen is not registered for the 1,500 meters. He\u2019s won both the 1,500 and 5,000 at the past three European championships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Ingebrigtsen won the Olympic title in the 1,500 at the Tokyo Games held in 2021. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he won gold in the 5,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The women\u2019s 100-meter final is also Monday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">This is the first time that Britain has hosted the European championships. An estimated 1,600 athletes from 49 member federations will compete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cI want us and our great sport to dominate the sporting landscape for the next week,\u201d said Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics. \u201cWe can forget about football transfers for a little bit and we can just enjoy the best athletes in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Visitors can enjoy host Birmingham, as well. The West Midlands city home to \u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d and the late Ozzy Osbourne also boasts some good cuisine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cWe have the best curry and fish and chips,\u201d said Matt Hudson-Smith, who grew up in the area and has a section of Alexander Stadium named for him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Hudson-Smith, the silver medalist in the 400 meters at the Paris Olympics, said Birmingham is sometimes on the receiving end of jokes \u201cfrom the Londoners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cWe\u2019re a quirky city. We\u2019re a strong community,\u201d said Hudson-Smith, who expects to be in the 400 final on Wednesday night. \u201cEveryone knows everybody. (AP Photo\/Aurelien Morissard, File)<\/p>\n<p>      <\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">MILWAUKEE (AP) \u2014 Jake Bauers singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th after Luis Lara made a spectacular run-saving catch in the top half of the inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Bauers&#8217; one-out single to shallow left off Yoendrys G\u00f3mez (2-2) brought home Brice Turang, who slid across the plate before catcher Ryan Jeffers could apply the tag. A replay review confirmed the call from home plate umpire Chad Whitson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Minnesota went scoreless in the top of the 10th after Lara made a leaping catch at the wall on Kody Clemens&#8217; drive to right to prevent a run from scoring. Lara also had made an incredible play in front of the wall to rob Brooks Lee of an extra-base hit in the sixth inning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Royce Lewis advanced to third on Clemens&#8217; drive but was stranded there when DL Hall (1-0) struck out Lee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Bauers also homered in the fifth inning, and Jackson Chourio also went deep to help the Brewers win the series. Lee and Clemens homered off Milwaukee&#8217;s Jacob Misiorowski.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Minnesota had tied the game at 3-all on Clemens&#8217; two-run shot in the sixth. Clemens\u2019 homer came immediately after Josh Bell drew a free pass for Misiorowski\u2019s only walk of the day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Both teams wasted chances afterward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The Brewers left runners on third and second in the sixth. They stranded men on first and second in the seventh and ninth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Minnesota left the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Misiorowski allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out nine to increase his major league-leading total to 204.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Minnesota\u2019s Connor Prielipp struck out seven and allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in five innings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The Twins open a three-game home series with the Baltimore Orioles. The scheduled starting pitchers for Monday&#8217;s series opener are Minnesota&#8217;s Dean Kremer (1-4, 5.93 ERA) and Baltimore&#8217;s Trevor Rogers (7-7, 4.20).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The Brewers start a West Coast trip at San Diego.
