The United Kingdom\u2019s main political parties boycotted the election, creating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/12\/clacton-reform-farage-elections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">embarrassing face-off for Farage<\/a> who had sought to use the election to boost his standing after allegations of financial impropriety.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Farage did not attend the official vote count early Friday and cancelled a planned victory speech, the BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>In earlier remarks as votes rolled in, Farage claimed a \u201cconvincing, overwhelming win\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called this by-election because I wanted the people of Clacton, the voters of this constituency to be my judge, not the mainstream media in Britain,\u201d he said, adding that Clacton voters had \u201cstuck two fingers up to the entire political establishment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Binface, whose campaign promises included putting a cap on croissant prices and moving the restroom hand dryer of a local pub, told Al Jazeera \u201cthere\u2019s more than one way to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Listing former British premiers he has challenged in previous elections, he said: \u201cYou guys are fixated on winning numerically, but \u2026 where\u2019s Theresa May, where\u2019s Rishi Sunak, where\u2019s Boris Johnson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 9,455 votes in Clacton for Binface, who has run in six elections since 2019, were his best-ever electoral result.<\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout in Thursday\u2019s election was 44 percent, lower than the 59 percent turnout recorded at the 2024 general election, but not unusual for a by-election.<\/p>\n<p>Farage and Binface both topped a long list of joke candidates, independents and members of fringe political parties.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates on stage at the Clacton Leisure Centre, where the count was held, were seen cheering for each other as the results were announced, with many receiving fewer than 100 votes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4853420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/getty_6a7eb4c4b0-1786688708.jpg\" alt=\"CLACTON-ON-SEA, ENGLAND - AUGUST 14: Jon Harvey, dressed as the satirical character Count Binface, waits with other candidates for the declaration of the Clacton-on-Sea by-election at Clacton Leisure Centre on August 14, 2026 in Clacton-on-Sea, England. He has pledged to crack down on migration, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/5\/reform-uk-plan-to-return-asylum-seekers-using-navy-dangerous-in-practice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using the British navy<\/a> to intercept and return asylum seekers arriving by boat.<\/p>\n<p>Farage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/7\/reform-uks-farage-resigns-as-mp-amid-funding-scandal-forcing-by-election\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quit his seat in parliament in July<\/a> during an investigation into whether he failed to report a 5 million pound ($6.75m) gift from a crypto billionaire overseas, triggering the by-election he took part in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have done nothing wrong.
