We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Disposable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/barbecues\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">barbecues<\/a> have been banned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a> due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/disposable-bbq-ban-burnham-wildfires-heatwave-b3033164.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heatwave conditions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The single-use grills \u201chave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/crime\/stoke-fire-maureen-avenue-arrest-houses-gardens-b3033165.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been the cause<\/a> of a number of serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wildfires\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildfires<\/a> across the country over the summer months\u201d, advice published online by the government said.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as dry weather and back-to-back heatwaves have created the perfect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/stourbridge-west-midlands-fires-uk-weather-b3032872.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conditions for wildfires<\/a>, with several starting in the New Forest, Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and another in Stourbridge in the West Midlands. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisposable barbecues cannot be considered a safe product in the context of the ongoing weather and environmental conditions and must not be made available for sale either in store or online at the current time,\u201d the government has said. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/andy-burnham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a> suggested that the measure could be introduced.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/iStock-1447363031-7e4c11c4.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Disposable barbecues have been the cause of a number of serious wildfires, the government suggests\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Disposable barbecues have been the cause of a number of serious wildfires, the government suggests (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Why are disposable barbecues banned? <\/p>\n<p>The UK is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/will-we-get-another-heatwave-uk-b3033126.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">currently in its fifth heatwave<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-drought-england-map-2026-water-areas-b3031709.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 70 per cent of the country is in drought<\/a>, creating the perfect conditions for wildfires. <\/p>\n<p>There have already been several wildfires across the UK due to the hot and dry weather and the government believes disposable barbecues have been responsible for several fires this summer. <\/p>\n<p>The National Fire Chiefs Council said England and Wales had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/wildfires-map-heatwave-uk-weather-new-forest-b3031777.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck by 1,017 wildfires this year<\/a> \u2013 the same as last year\u2019s record-breaking total \u2013 and at least 458 in July alone.<\/p>\n<p>Barbecues can cause fires when smouldering ash and embers are carried by the wind onto areas of dry grass, according to the London Fire Brigade. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Mr Burnham said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got 37 fires across England and Wales right now, four of them are major incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t on this call today say to you that all of them are down to disposable barbecues, they\u2019re not, and I wouldn\u2019t, wouldn\u2019t claim that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s probable that some of them have been caused in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2290421856...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"There have been several wildfires this summer, including in the West Midlands.
