{"id":103842,"date":"2026-08-15T00:57:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T00:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/103842\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T00:57:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T00:57:26","slug":"days-of-the-ufu-deciding-government-policy-are-over-furious-agriculture-minister-hits-back-at-calls-to-resign-over-cattle-cull","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/103842\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Days of the UFU deciding government policy are over\u2019- Furious agriculture minister hits back at calls to resign over cattle cull"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Agriculture minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/andrew-muir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/andrew-muir\/\">Andrew Muir<\/a> has launched a blistering response to calls to resign by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/ufu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/ufu\/\">Ulster Farmers Union<\/a> (UFU) over the mass shooting of cows in Co Tyrone, insisting its days of \u201cdictating government policy are over\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The minister \u2013 who claims he has been \u201cassaulted\u201d and has received death threats over the controversy \u2013 hit back at the UFU on Friday after it called for his immediate resignation over the cull, and that of former GAA triple All-Ireland winner-turned NI chief veterinary officer (CVO) Brian Dooher, plus DAERA permanent secretary Katrina Godfrey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The UFU\u2019s call followed an emergency meeting of its executive committee on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir insisted he was not going anywhere, and accused the UFU of leading agriculture in the north to \u201cproblems that I\u2019m seeking to fix\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/flag-urging-killing-of-police-and-protestants-erected-beside-derry-republican-bonfire-KNKFTHHUDFAGHKPQ4H4ZPDXS4M\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Flag urging killing of police and Protestants erected beside Derry republican bonfire\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WZCDYLQ34JGPJMVYA2BVRVXF7M.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/noah-donohoe-inquest-live-latest-updates-as-proceedings-enter-week-nine-JOFVJPI4SJHUFCANHXZX5AXZSQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Noah Donohoe inquest: PSNI witness &#x2018;unsure&#x2019; difference camera at rear of Northwood property would have made\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786755445_388_QO3CUVBU6JCCTFND2C66OWR6D4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He also said that for the union to \u201cname and target\u201d DAERA officials was \u201centirely inappropriate\u201d, and demanded they \u201capologise for what they have done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The controversial cattle cull has become a crisis for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/daera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/daera\/\">Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs<\/a> (DAERA) after it emerged the 51 animals were openly shot dead in fields in the Fivemiletown area in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Political opponents in the DUP led a protest at the steps of Stormont earlier this week, urging Minister Muir to step down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That demonstration was attended by hundreds of farmers, while inside Minister Muir gave evidence on the incident to the DAERA scrutiny committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">UFU leaders attended that meeting but said they were \u201cbitterly disappointed\u201d with what they heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Despite UFU members attending the protest, the union had stopped short of calling for the minister to resign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Now, however, the UFU is officially calling for Mr Muir to step down, along with DAERA\u2019s permanent secretary and CVO Mr Dooher, the former manager of Tyrone\u2019s Gaelic Football team who was appointed as chief veterinary officer in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"More than 50 cattle were shot in the fields of a farm in Co Tyrone\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/P6YLZVCKM5H6LLQEBARM3MBEKM.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"414\"\/>More than 50 cattle were shot in the fields of a farm in Co Tyrone <img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Aidan O'Rourke tackles Brian Dooher\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RF7KUINQ3FBJTIRI7MP5FVBZ2E.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Brian Dooher (left) in action with the Tyrone Gaelic football team <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He was part of the Tyrone senior squad in 2003, 2005 and 2008 when they lifted the Sam Maguire after All-Ireland final wins, and captained the side between 2004 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The UFU, which represents over 12,500 farmers in Northern Ireland, said on Friday that a previous vote of no confidence in DAERA, held last year, has now been extended to Minister Muir, Ms Godfrey and Mr Dooher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Minister Muir stressed on Friday in response to the UFU announcement that the cull \u201cwas neither authorised nor directed by me\u201d, but he ordered the external review \u201cbecause the public deserves clear answers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The UFU said it has no confidence in the independence of the review of the cull announced, which will be led by the Republic\u2019s former Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Martin Blake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The minister has said the external review will provide an \u201cevidence-based assessment\u201d of the planning and carrying out of the cull that took place on June 29 and 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A total of 51 cows were shot dead as horrified members of the public watched, which happened after a court order was issued confiscating the cattle from an owner convicted of animal welfare offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One disturbed onlooker described the slaughter as \u201cthe most disgusting thing I ever witnessed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">UFU president John McLenaghan said the union\u2019s decision to call for the resignations was \u201cnot taken lightly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, confidence has been severely damaged and the most recent event is just one of many instances where farmers feel that the Department has lost touch with farmers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSerious concerns have been raised regarding the independence of the review, its terms of reference and lack of specialist panel appointed. In the view of our union, the process as it currently stands does not provide the level of independence and confidence that farmers deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cThe UFU\u2019s position is clear.
