We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister has called in the military to help battle a fire in the West Midlands, before sending an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/emergency-alert\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emergency alert<\/a> to phones across England and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wales\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wildfires\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildfire <\/a>threat.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing an earlier set of measures on Friday, Mr Burnham warned \u201cBritain is a tinderbox right now\u201d with \u201c37 fires smouldering around the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Several major blazes, including in Stourbridge, in the West Midlands, where 19 homes were completely destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burnham said 100 military personnel \u2013 from Queen\u2019s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, supported by the 22 Engineer Regiment \u2013 had been deployed to South Wales to offer \u201ccritically needed\u201d support to fight fires throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Among their equipment are four water bowsers, each capable of storing and transporting 20,000 litres of water, and a further 100 members of the Armed Forces were deployed on Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Aerial firefighting capacity, such as helicopters to dampen flames, will be commissioned at a national level, the Prime Minister added.<\/p>\n<p>The alert, sent on a rolling basis from around 7pm to millions, warns people not to light anything that could spark a fire, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/andy-burnham-britain-prime-minister-stourbridge-b3033181.html\" title=\"Burnham sets out package of measures to respond to devastating wildfires\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">barbecues,<\/a> campfires and fireworks.
