A doctor described during the trial of Lucy Letby<\/a> as her \u2018boyfriend\u2019 died on the anniversary of the serial killer nurse\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n The consultant, known only as Dr A after being granted anonymity, was found collapsed in his car at Whiston Hospital, Merseyside<\/a>.<\/p>\n He was admitted to intensive care but died nine days later, on July 3 \u2013 eight years to the day since Letby was first arrested on suspicion of murdering babies.<\/p>\n An inquest into his death has been listed to take place next February.<\/p>\n The doctor is reported to have been seriously ill.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n He had recently been sacked over messages swapped with Letby about one of the babies she would go on to try and kill, according to the Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n The newspaper reported that he faced a disciplinary hearing in June over the messages, which were said to have breached patient confidentiality.<\/p>\n The only flicker of emotion betrayed by Letby during her 10-month trial came in mid-February 2023 when Dr A was sworn in as a witness.<\/p>\n His voice prompted her to break down in tears as she abruptly left her seat and walked towards the exit door of the dock.<\/p>\n When the time came for her to enter the witness box, she said she loved him as a \u2018trusted friend\u2019 but was not in love with him.<\/p>\n Jurors heard they swapped 1,355 Facebook<\/a> messages over four months between June and September 2016, discussing babies who collapsed while they were on shift together.<\/p>\n One such message was\u00a0Letby\u00a0inquiring about the condition of Child N, an infant she attempted to murder in early June 2016, and querying with the medic whether she had done anything wrong.<\/p>\n The inquiry heard he messaged back: \u2018Oh\u00a0Lucy, poor little thing. I am sure he has had the best care possible and you will have done everything you could for him.\u2019<\/p>\n The prosecution accused\u00a0Letby\u00a0of having \u2018a crush\u2019 on the\u00a0doctor\u00a0and that she had attacked those infants to get his attention at work<\/a>.<\/p>\n His\u00a0name appeared repeatedly on a number of scrawled notes found at\u00a0Letby\u2019s\u00a0home address following her arrest.<\/p>\n Letby said the pair would meet outside work, telling jurors \u2018sometimes he came to my house, sometimes we would go out for meals or coffee or walks\u2019.<\/p>\n She\u00a0said the friendship \u2018fizzled out\u2019 at the beginning of 2018 before her arrest in the summer<\/a> of that year.<\/p>\n Giving evidence to the Thirlwall Inquiry in 2024, which is looking into how the deaths may have been prevented, he said Letby \u2018misled and maybe manipulated\u2019 him into giving her information about babies she had attacked.<\/p>\n Asked by counsel to the inquiry Rachel Langdale KC: \u2018Do you think it was appropriate to be messaging about Child N with her at this time?\u2019<\/p>\n The doctor said: \u2018In hindsight, no. Looking at the content of the messaging here, I have shared too much. It is common to give updates and how patients are without naming them or giving lots of clinical detail.<\/p>\n \u2018I gave details at the time that I thought were helpful but I see now that was probably not the case.\u2019<\/p>\n In relation to a question about messages \u2018needing information from you about babies and how they might have died\u2019, he added: \u2018It felt like a supportive gesture.
