Something dark has happened that we\u2019re not happy with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the case had become fodder for ideological point-scoring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, the issues attached to the tragedy are juicy issues, for lack of a better term, for the right and the far right. It ticks all of their boxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Racist feeding frenzy\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The controversy centred on allegations that Arday had plagiarised parts of his 2015 doctoral thesis and embellished details of his personal biography. Arday resigned from his post at Cambridge on August 5, saying the \u201crelentless accusations\u201d had taken a \u201cprofound toll\u201d on him and his family.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his doctorate, said it had cleared him of plagiarism, but Cambridge \u2013 which initially dismissed the allegations as a \u201cvile campaign\u201d to undermine Arday\u2019s credibility \u2013 later opened a review of his appointment amid the continuing controversy.<\/p>\n<p>He was found dead two weeks later, with Metropolitan Police saying the death was being treated as \u201cunexpected\u201d but that it was \u201cnot believed to be suspicious\u201d. The cause has not been made public.<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge Chancellor Chris Smith, Lord Smith of Finsbury, condemned what he called a \u201cracist feeding frenzy\u201d in a statement issued after Arday\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4862399 size-arc-image-770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Patricia-Cohen-on-the-left-1-1787017377.jpg\" alt=\"Patricia Cohen holds a yellow flower during a vigil for Jason Arday\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Patricia Cohen holds a yellow flower during a vigil for Jason Arday [Sunniya Ahmad Pirzada\/Al Jazeera]<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a petition calling for a public inquiry into the media\u2019s conduct, started by the Good Law Project, had gathered more than 96,000 signatures by Monday. It argued that Arday\u2019s \u201ctragic death was the direct, foreseeable and foreseen result of press harassment,\u201d and that \u201ca significant element in that harassment was the colour of his skin\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The petition pointed to other academics who it said had faced comparatively little scrutiny over similar allegations. This included George Holmes, a university vice chancellor implicated in a fraud inquiry, and William O\u2019Reilly, a Cambridge professor accused of plagiarising student essays. The petition noted that both men are white.<\/p>\n<p>According to NewsCord, a media analysis organisation, some 249 articles about Arday were published in media in the United Kingdom in the 22 days before his death, with 188 appearing in the final nine days after his resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers at Monday\u2019s vigil had asked attendees not to speak with reporters, and the mood towards the media was hostile throughout the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Cohen, who was at the vigil holding a yellow rose and a placard, said she had stopped reading coverage of the case weeks earlier, calling it \u201cbiased\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew they were just damning and unfair,\u201d she said. \u201cIf he did do something wrong, it didn\u2019t warrant the abuse, the torment that he was getting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She questioned whether journalists would face any consequences for how they had covered the story. \u201cAre we going to start penalising the journalists? Are they going to be monitored better? Because the way that they hound people, especially people of colour \u2013 it\u2019s hard to describe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We let him down\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Liz Combe, who came to the vigil with friends, said the case felt personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here because Jason could have been my son,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was in the prime of his life, doing something for the Black community, showing up for us, in his greatness, and then to be torn down, just because of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4862401 size-arc-image-770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Liz-Combe-4-1787017572.jpg\" alt=\"Liz Combe came with friends to the vigil for Jason Arday [Al Jazeera]\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Liz Combe came with friends to the vigil for Jason Arday [Al Jazeera]<\/p>\n<p>The vigil drew several prominent Black British public figures, including politicians Diane Abbott and Dawn Butler, filmmaker Misan Harriman, and singer Beverley Knight.<\/p>\n<p>Abbott, the first Black woman elected to the UK Parliament, told the crowd she had seen Arday a week before his death. \u201cHe was always a lovely, kind, and brilliant man\u201d, she said, \u201cbut the vicious campaign against him was beginning to get to him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said she believed that \u201cthe vicious media campaign drove him to his death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Butler apologised on behalf of those who had failed to protect Arday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe let him down, and I\u2019m sorry to his family; we couldn\u2019t protect him,\u201d she said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a Black versus white battle; it\u2019s a battle between good and evil, between racists and antiracists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4862405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/getty_6a83b9b386-1787017651.jpg\" alt=\"LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 17: Labour MP Dawn Butler speaks during a vigil for former Cambridge professor Jason Arday in Trafalgar Square on August 17, 2026 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Alishia Abodunde\/Getty Images)\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Labour MP Dawn Butler speaks during a vigil for Jason Arday in Trafalgar Square [Alishia Abodunde\/Getty Images]<\/p>\n<p>Knight, the singer, described watching the coverage unfold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw it unfurling in front of our eyes \u2013 the destruction of a brilliant man, for sport, ignited by jealousy and fuelled by hatred,\u201d she said, looking out over the crowd, estimated at 30,000 by organisers. \u201cWhen I look around now, I see an ocean of unity, togetherness, and solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several weeks before Arday\u2019s death, Simon Baron-Cohen, director of Cambridge\u2019s Autism Research Centre, had publicly warned that one in four autistic people have planned or attempted suicide, and spoke of the \u201crelentless bullying of a vulnerable autistic man,\u201d raising concerns about his welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Arday\u2019s family did not attend the vigil.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from them was read by Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the family\u2019s member of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe past days have been an incredibly painful time,\u201d the family said, thanking those who had shown \u201ckindness, generosity, and solidarity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They described Arday as \u201ca selfless and gentle soul who tirelessly uplifted others through his words and actions\u201d, adding that \u201cthe public cruelty Jason was subjected to was too much for any man to bear\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement closed with words the family said were Arday\u2019s own: \u201cEvery human life has a purpose. Imagine what might happen if we were all united in the just cause of valuing all human beings equally.
