Two government sources said the regulator is now expected to lift those sales bans as a result of the reformulation agreement.

United Spirits, which produces McDowell’s, Royal Challenge, Antiquity Blue and McDowell’s No. 1 Celebration Matured XXX Rum, said it had engaged with the FSSAI on the regulator’s interpretation of the guidelines and had taken steps to bring its products fully into compliance.

“Our products have consistently met all applicable safety and quality standards. We have engaged with the FSSAI on their position of the existing guidelines and have since taken appropriate measures to align our products fully with the revised requirements,” the company said in a statement. “Diageo India remains committed to the highest standards of compliance and consumer safety.”

Neither Diageo nor the FSSAI had responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

The development carries significance beyond Diageo’s portfolio. Industry analysts note that flavoring practices similar to those flagged by the FSSAI have been used across India’s spirits sector for years. If the regulator’s revised requirements are applied uniformly, other major producers may be compelled to adjust their own formulations, potentially reshaping manufacturing processes in one of the world’s largest whisky markets.

India is a critical growth market for Diageo, with United Spirits serving as the company’s flagship operation in the country. The reformulation agreement allows the company to restore sales of affected brands in states where restrictions had been imposed, limiting the commercial impact of the regulatory challenge.

The FSSAI’s enforcement action reflects a broader tightening of food and beverage safety standards in India, where regulators have stepped up scrutiny of product formulations across multiple categories in recent years. For multinational consumer goods companies, the episode underscores the importance of navigating India’s evolving regulatory landscape while maintaining local production scale.

Add to Google Preferred Sources

Once added, BigGo Finance appears first in Google Search Top Stories, so you get the broadest, most up-to-the-minute, and most comprehensive global financial news first.

Diageo’s Indian subsidiary United Spirits has agreed to change the formulations of some of its whisky and rum…

[21250
44084,4110,42783,1233,44183,41609,22143
post-105881","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-diageo","tag-antiquity-blue","tag-diageo","tag-food-safety-and-standards-authority-of-india","tag-india","tag-mcdowells","tag-royal-challenge","tag-united-spirits
["GET
