maker Rolls-Royce could mark a breakthrough in <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/india?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">India<\/a>\u2019s decades-long quest to develop a fighter jet engine, analysts have said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But they caution that money and manufacturing capabilities alone would not be enough to overcome the technical challenges of manufacturing such an engine.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">On Friday, the two companies announced their \u201cstrategic intent\u201d to form a partnership, saying they would explore developing an engine for India\u2019s fifth-generation advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA) and setting up a facility in India to build design and development capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as New Delhi considers <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/politics\/article\/3319032\/india-turns-europe-next-gen-fighter-tech-defence-ties-deepen?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a rival proposal from French engine maker Safran<\/a> and India\u2019s state-run Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), which is being evaluated by the Cabinet Committee on Security, the top government body for major defence and national security approvals.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The two competing plans reportedly promise technology transfer and intellectual property rights for engine development, a long-standing sticking point in India\u2019s efforts to reduce dependence on foreign defence suppliers.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">India has been trying to overcome the setback of its indigenous Kaveri engine programme, which has failed to meet the air-propulsion requirements for the Tejas, its home-grown light combat
