We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Manicure lovers may be panicking that their favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treatment<\/a> is set to disappear from UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/salons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">salons<\/a> under the new gel nail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ban\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ban<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>A key ingredient used to make many brands of<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/gel-nail-polish-banned-us-europe-tpo-b2818949.html\"> gel nail polish<\/a> has been banned in England, Wales and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>But these new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/regulations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulations<\/a> do not mean Britons will be unable to get a manicure.<\/p>\n<p>Here, The Independent takes a look at what will change under the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/ban-chemicals-pfas-reach-gel-manicures-b2858463.html\">new regulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gel manicure.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The ingredient which allows gel polish to cure under ultraviolet (UV) light has been banned\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The ingredient which allows gel polish to cure under ultraviolet (UV) light has been banned (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>What ingredient has been banned? <\/p>\n<p>Although called the \u201cgel nail ban\u201d the regulation actually only bans the use of one ingredient- Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, commonly known as TPO.<\/p>\n<p>This ingredient is a &#8220;photoinitiator&#8221;, which allows gel polish to cure under ultraviolet (UV) light to make the varnish more durable and hold its colour for longer.<\/p>\n<p>When does the gel nail ban start?<\/p>\n<p>TPO has already been banned in the European Union since September 1, 2025, stopping nail technicians using this product. <\/p>\n<p>But in the UK the ingredient ban only came into effect on Saturday, preventing manufacturers from selling any new products containing TPO. <\/p>\n<p>However, the ban is coming in gradually and the deadline for salons to stop using the product is Valentine\u2019s Day 2027. <\/p>\n<p>That means salons will be able to offer gel manicures using TPO before February next year until stocks run out &#8211; nail technicians just won\u2019t be able to buy new stock from now on containing TPO.<\/p>\n<p>The product can still be used in the US, Australia and Asia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/684864330...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The deadline for salons to stop using the product is Valentine\u2019s Day 2027\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The deadline for salons to stop using the product is Valentine\u2019s Day 2027 (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Why has TPO been banned? <\/p>\n<p>Several animal studies have linked the chemical TPO to long-term fertility damage and reproductive issues. <\/p>\n<p>Caroline Rainsford, Director of Science at The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), said: \u201cThe reason why TPO has been banned in cosmetic products in the EU is based on its hazardous properties, meaning how a substance might behave under a \u2018worst case\u2019 situation when our bodies are exposed to a very large amount. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not how TPO is used in cosmetics. The amount of this ingredient used in nail products is over a thousand times less than the amount which could have any negative effect on fertility and these products are applied to the nail, so the potential for the ingredient to be absorbed into our bodies is even smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What will salons use instead?<\/p>\n<p>TPO is only used in some gel polishes and not in traditional air-dried polishes.<\/p>\n<p>There are also already TPO-free gels on the market and many salons use these products.
