{"id":106934,"date":"2026-08-19T19:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T19:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/106934\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T19:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T19:27:08","slug":"dementia-patient-faces-inhumane-deportation-from-sweden-after-being-ordered-to-leave-care-home-in-just-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/106934\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia patient faces &#8216;inhumane&#8217; deportation from Sweden after being ordered to leave care home in just days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A British pensioner with dementia is facing removal from Sweden tomorrow in what his family has described as an &#8220;inhumane&#8221; act that could cost him his life.<\/p>\n<p>Horace Mason, 74, has been living in the Scandinavian country for more than a quarter of a century and currently depends on round-the-clock care for both dementia and Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>His children have presented medical evidence indicating that the estimated 12-hour journey back to the UK could prove fatal, given his multiple health conditions including vascular dementia, vascular Parkinsonism and heart complications.<\/p>\n<p>Should Mr Mason fail to leave by August 20, Swedish police will be authorised to enforce his removal from the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mason, nicknamed &#8220;George&#8221; by those close to him, originally relocated to Sweden after his son Carl had moved there nearly 30 years ago to marry his partner. <\/p>\n<p>He followed to assist with looking after his grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>His residency came under threat following Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The family lodged an application for a residence permit in December 2021, within the timeframe set out in the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"33953\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"543d0fb110a0d14a73f035c615be25fb\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20660%20371'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/horace-mason.webp\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" alt=\"Horace Mason\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Horace Mason is facing removal from Sweden tomorrow<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>MICHELLE TOROSSIAN\/HANDOUT<\/p>\n<p>However, in November 2025, Swedish authorities rejected the application, citing insufficient documentation, a failure the family attributes to a court-appointed power of attorney who left out crucial evidence as Mr Mason&#8217;s health deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>On July 23, Sweden&#8217;s Migration Court of Appeal upheld the decision, ruling that &#8220;the state&#8217;s interest in regulated immigration outweighs [Mr Mason&#8217;s] interest in continuing to live and exercise [his] private life in Sweden&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling left his daughter Michelle feeling &#8220;physically sick,&#8221; she told LBC.<\/p>\n<p>She said her father had been left &#8220;worried, confused&#8221; by the prospect of deportation, asking her: &#8220;What&#8217;s going to happen? What have I done?
