{"id":107399,"date":"2026-08-20T11:39:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T11:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/107399\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T11:39:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T11:39:13","slug":"anti-corruption-body-urges-uk-to-toughen-council-codes-of-conduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/107399\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-corruption body urges UK to toughen council codes of conduct"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Image\/Anti-corruption-body-urges-UK-to-toughen-council-codes-of-conduct\/shutterstock_2567109939211\/jpg\" alt=\"Anti-corruption body urges UK to toughen council codes of conduct image\" class=\"img-responsive img-full\"\/>\u00a9 SewCreamStudio \/ Shutterstock.com.<br \/>\n        The Council of Europe&#8217;s anti-corruption body has called on the UK to strengthen codes of conduct and integrity training for local councillors, as part of a wider evaluation of anti-corruption safeguards at local government level.<\/p>\n<p>Published <a href=\"https:\/\/mycloud.coe.int\/s\/mQEbXEfw9woDnoy?dir=\/&amp;editing=false&amp;openfile=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">today<\/a>, the report by the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) assesses measures at the Greater London Authority and Kent County Council, which volunteered for the review, and finds the UK has a well-developed framework for preventing corruption.<\/p>\n<p>GRECO praised several good practices, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Councillor-found-in-breach-of-code-of-conduct-over-disrespectful-comments\/64321\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">binding codes of conduct<\/a>, rigorous procurement procedures, detailed gifts and hospitality policies, and proactive information publication.<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations for improvement<\/p>\n<p>GRECO&#8217;s report made six recommendations for improvement:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/West-Northants-Vice-Chairman-apologises-sincerely-for-sexist-remark\/64060\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clearer sanctions<\/a> for code of conduct breaches by elected representatives<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Council-chiefs-sound-alarm-over-deteriorating-behaviour\/64578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confidential integrity<\/a> advice for staff<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 strengthened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/WhatsApp-probe-finds-councillors-in-breach-of-code-of-conduct\/63766\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">integrity training<\/a> for councillors<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 greater transparency in lobbying<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 full operational status for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/MPs-back-Bill-Butler-as-Local-Audit-Office-chair\/64545\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new local audit office<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 a legal requirement to publish councillors&#8217; gifts and hospitality, including explicit \u2018nil returns\u2019 where none were received.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations are addressed to both national and local authorities, with GRECO noting that implementation will require close coordination given the UK&#8217;s constitutional and institutional structure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/form\/bulletin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/HR.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u00a9 SewCreamStudio \/ Shutterstock.com.
