A pink goose telling you to \u2018stop panicking\u2019, a blue elephant whose \u2018rampage is over\u2019, an apologetic green raccoon \u2013 if you don\u2019t know the name David Shrigley, you\u2019ll almost certainly recognise his playful, tongue-in-cheek line drawings\u00a0from coasters, mugs and greetings cards sold in\u00a0countless souvenir shops and galleries across London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Shrigley is also a revered painter, sculptor, filmmaker and photographer. And next year, Dulwich Picture Gallery will host his first solo exhibition in a British public gallery since 2012.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be the kind of exhibition you expect. Instead of being shown on their own, brand-new never-before-seen works by Shrigley will be displayed alongside\u00a017th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shrigley\u2019s\u00a0pieces will be in dialogue with the 400-year-old works, bringing out their comedic side and demonstrating \u2018how artists through the ages have used humour to observe everyday life, human behaviour and social interaction\u2019. The older stuff on show will include masterpieces from artists\u00a0like Jan Steen, Adriaen Brouwer, David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Rembrandt van Rijn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Helen Hillyard, head of collection and exhibitions at the gallery, said: \u2018Shrigley \u2013 like our historic painters \u2013 has an instinct for finding the funny side of everyday life. He is the perfect artist to bring back playfulness to the old masters, and remind us that great art doesn\u2019t always need to be serious.\u2019<\/p>\n

There\u2019s still a while to wait before we can see how\u00a0the artist\u00a0has responded to the old masters. David Shrigley at Dulwich Picture Gallery will run from May 25, 2027 until September 5, 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n
