Burnham told colleagues at a meeting in Manchester that he was speaking to the nation&#8217;s governing bodies over the prospect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The plans sit alongside ambitions to host a Northern Olympics, according to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/burnham-plots-bid-to-host-mens-world-cup-in-the-uk-4721946\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">the I<\/a>. The World Cup was last hosted in the UK in 1966 when England came away victorious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Burnham is pushing to make the north a standout destination for sport, and he also hopes to bring the 2035<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/golf\/hulton-park-ryder-cup-bid-33955681\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> Ryder Cup to Bolton<\/a>. The<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/england-fifa-world-cup-host-35228320\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> next opportunity to land the World Cup as a host nation comes in 2038.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is unclear whether the Prime Minister plans to achieve his <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/andy-burnham-world-cup-fifa-37487645\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">World Cup<\/a> dream at the soonest opportunity or whether 2042 or 2046 could be targeted instead. The formal process for awarding the 2038 tournament has not yet started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Earlier this month, Burnham hinted that he would like to see the World Cup return to the United Kingdom. He believes the nation&#8217;s significance in the sport&#8217;s history warrants its hosting the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt makes you wonder whether the authorities at the European and global level have something against us,\u201d he told Ellis Platten, host of the Away Days podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe country that invented the game, you\u2019d think we would have had a bit more of that attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Burnham has previously been disappointed in a similar quest.
