A student at Bradford Grammar School has secured an apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce, one of the world’s leading engineering companies.<\/p>\n
Talented Henry Hitchen was offered two prestigious aerospace engineering degree apprenticeships with either Airbus or Rolls-Royce, but after consideration, opted for Rolls-Royce.<\/p>\n
Rolls-Royce currently operates a manufacturing facility in the West Craven town of Barnoldswick.<\/p>\n
It came as Henry, from Bradford, achieved an A in his Physics, B in Mathematics and A* in Business when he collected his A Levels today. Now the 18-year-old will take up his apprenticeship in Filton, Bristol, and combine degree-level university study with paid employment.<\/p>\n
He said: “I’m so happy with my grades and I’m excited to go to Bristol this September to start my degree apprenticeship with Rolls-Royce, which is an incredible company.”<\/p>\n
Henry chose the apprenticeship pathway after gaining hands-on work experience with BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness and MBDA in Bolton during his A Levels.<\/p>\n
“I originally thought I’d go straight to university, but once I started looking at degree apprenticeships, I realised they suited how I prefer to learn,” Henry said. “Being able to gain practical experience in industry while studying for a degree really appealed to me. I’m looking forward to working alongside experienced engineers and learning from them.”<\/p>\n
Henry credits the support of staff at BGS with helping him navigate the selection process, which included online assessments, technical presentations and group interviews.<\/p>\n
“My teachers were supportive throughout,” he added. “If there was a complex topic I wanted to dive into, or when I needed to practice my presentation before the interviews, they were always willing to offer time and feedback.”<\/p>\n
Dr Simon Hinchliffe, Headmaster at BGS, said: “Securing a place on a degree apprenticeship of this calibre is a tremendous accomplishment.<\/p>\n
“For Henry to receive offers from both Airbus and Rolls-Royce reflects not only his academic ability, but also his dedication to aerospace engineering.
