assigned to boosting EV production in the UK \u2013 with more than half of the cash going on JLR\u2019s new Somerset gigafactory.<\/p>\n<p>The measures include spending on training staff, major research and development projects and smaller battery innovation projects, in a move that ministers say will create a \u2018thriving sector in the UK for decades to come\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The news was confirmed by business secretary Peter Kyle, who said that the investment could allow automotive firms to operate with \u2018stability and confidence\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/dealerway.co.uk?utm_campaign=CarDealerMagBanner1&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_source=CarDealerMagazine\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/NO-Sellers-Fees-600-x-90-px.gif\" width=\"600px\" height=\"90px\" alt=\"Advert\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of the \u00a3700m of taxpayer grants and support, the majority \u2013 \u00a3380m \u2013 has been assigned to ongoing work on JLR\u2019s car battery plant in Somerset.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark project was <a href=\"https:\/\/cardealermagazine.co.uk\/jlr-has-picked-somerset-for-its-new-gigafactory-with-official-announcement-imminent-reports\/287037\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced by the carmaker back in 2023<\/a> with the brand set to pour billions into development.<\/p>\n<p>It was rumoured at the time that the then-Tory government had agreed to offer millions of pounds of support to the development, in order to secure the site for Britain, amid talks of it being built in Spain instead.<\/p>\n<p><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/cardealerlive.co.uk\/?utm_source=cardealermag&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=cdmbannerfeb26\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/CDL_2026_600x90_animation.gif\" width=\"600px\" height=\"90px\" alt=\"Advert\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Labour has now confirmed what that support will look like, with building now well underway by Agratas \u2013 a construction firm that shares the same owner as JLR.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Bridgewater site, Kyle said: \u2018In an unstable world, our modern industrial strategy is providing investors with the stability and confidence they need to plan not just for the next year but for the next ten years and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It will help ensure advanced manufacturing remains a thriving sector in the UK for decades to come.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Of the remaining money, \u00a390m is being provided to both JLR and Nissan to support EV research and development (R&amp;D).<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/b2a99651-bc53-48f7-a713-89065307e8b2?shareToken=2bc547a2a689502bb0b5d3750c8e1911\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Times <\/a>reports that \u00a3100m has been assigned to \u2018tooling-up and training staff in the future electric vehicle supply chain\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be an additional \u00a347m for R&amp;D in other smaller battery innovation projects, with other funding on offer to help smaller firms adopt digital technologies, artificial intelligence and robotics.<\/p>\n<p><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/dealers.cargurus.co.uk\/drc\/cargurus-advantage?utm_source=DigitalAdvertising&amp;utm_medium=Banner&amp;utm_campaign=BannerUKDigitalAdvertisingCDMidPageBannerDec2025&amp;pid=BannerUKDigitalAdvertisingCDMidPageBannerDec2025\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775756069_331_image.png\" width=\"600px\" height=\"180px\" alt=\"Advert\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ministers also want to spend money on providing skills training in sixth forms and higher education, in order to secure the long-term security of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/b2a99651-bc53-48f7-a713-89065307e8b2?shareToken=2bc547a2a689502bb0b5d3750c8e1911\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Times<\/a>, business secretary Kyle added that \u2018Britain is done hesitating on the future of automotive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Competition for automotive investment is intensifying at speed, with major economies committing vast sums to secure manufacturing, batteries and supply chains for the long term.
