Mention the year 1976<\/a> to any British person of a certain age, and they will immediately regale you with a litany of endless anecdotes from that infamous summer heatwave \u2013 each more banal than the last. <\/p>\n Ask the more musically-inclined of persons, though, and images of safety pins, bondage trousers, and buzzsaw guitars are conjured up; it was, after all, the year that punk was born.\u00a0<\/p>\n Putting an exact date on the birth of punk in the UK is a rather tricky task, not least because the parameters of the genre are famously diffuse. You could certainly argue, for instance, that the New York Dolls\u2019 1973 appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test<\/a> was a watershed moment, as was the formation of the Sex Pistols in 1975 and the release of Patti Smith\u2019s Horses that same year. <\/p>\n Ultimately, though, it was 1976 when the scene really started to thrive in the squats and sweat-soaked venues of London.\u00a0<\/p>\n July saw New York arrive in London, in the form of the leather-jacketed Ramones<\/a>, whose gigs at London\u2019s Roundhouse were attended by virtually every architect of the UK\u2019s punk realm, including members of The Clash, The Damned, and the Sex Pistols. A month prior, further up north in Manchester, the Pistols held their infamous Lesser Free Trade Hall gig, sparking inspiration for Factory Records, Joy Division, The Smiths, and The Fall in their wake. Everywhere you looked, something was brewing in the summer of 1976. <\/p>\n Yet, in spite of this underground, DIY revolution happening in London, and quickly spreading across the entirety of the UK, you still had to be pretty tuned in to local music scenes to gain any indication of the blossoming punk scene. At that time, most young people in Britain got their music fix from the singles charts and, crucially, Top of the Pops, neither of which featured any indication of punk in 1976. <\/p>\n Quite the opposite, in fact: for the entirety of the \u2018summer of punk\u2019 in 1976, the chart standings were headed up by Elton and Kiki Dee with \u2018Don\u2019t Go Breaking My Heart\u2019, which was then replaced in September by ABBA\u2019s \u2018Dancing Queen\u2019. Not exactly a recipe for a defiant DIY revolution of the airwaves.<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n Punk\u2019s inability to break into the mainstream in 1976 was down to a multitude of factors. For starters, the BBC \u2013 finding common ground with the Soviet Union in a rare moment of Cold War togetherness \u2013 seemed to view punk as a threat to British society, and so largely refused to give it a platform on its radio stations, and certainly not on Top of the Pops. <\/p>\n Another factor was tied to the very nature of the scene, which was that punk was inherently anti-commercial; the bands that made up the movement didn\u2019t necessarily want to reach the charts, and in later years, groups like The Clash made an explicit point not to go on Top of the Pops even when invited to do so.<\/p>\n Partly due to that DIY sensibility and rejection of the musical mainstream, it also took quite a while before any of this angry new generation managed to actually release any records. The Damned were the first, with their blistering \u2018New Rose\u2019<\/a> arriving via the independent Stiff Records in October of 1976 \u2013 while soft-rockers Chicago topped the charts with \u2018If You Leave Me Now\u2019. <\/p>\n In the wake of that inaugural single, the major music industry began to take notice of the punk world, and more singles arrived with a fury. \u2018Anarchy In The UK\u2019, the Pistols\u2019 debut offering, hit the airwaves in December and even managed to break into the lower leagues of the singles charts. <\/p>\n The following year, in 1977, they reached number two, at the same time that groups like The Clash and Adverts began to make their mark on the mainstream, too. Rock and roll might have changed forever during that heatwave summer, but as far as the charts were concerned, middle-of-the-road pop still reigned supreme. <\/p>\n
