Demand for the cloud computing power needed to train and run \u200centerprise AI systems has surged, benefiting China&#8217;s largest technology companies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">CEO Eddie Wu said that the company expects to break even on AI-related capex within the next three years based on current average gross margins, after \u200bhaving already spent this year half of its 380 billion yuan ($56.4 billion) AI investment planned for 2026-29.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Alibaba&#8217;s capital expenditure rose 75% to 67.68 billion yuan in April-June, the group&#8217;s first quarter, as it increased procurement of CPU chips due to AI agent demand and semiconductor component prices went up.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Alibaba is locked in a battle with other \u200cChinese tech giants and startups to release more capable, low-cost frontier AI models, highlighting the rapid pace of advancement of Chinese AI models and their shorter release cycles.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">But as competition heats up, firms are pivoting towards offering better agentic and coding capabilities to capture more of China&#8217;s lucrative domestic enterprise market.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Advanced chips produced by Alibaba&#8217;s in-house unit T-head are already being deployed at scale on &#8220;supernodes&#8221; &#8211; massive server racks linking hundreds of semiconductors together &#8211; for AI model training and inference, Wu said. The company is banking on scaling up deployment of its in-house chips to reduce \u200ccapex costs and to generate future revenue.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none;
