{"id":109938,"date":"2026-08-24T14:28:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/109938\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T14:28:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:28:07","slug":"labours-cigar-crackdown-threatens-to-totally-wipe-out-britains-140-year-old-trade-london-business-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/109938\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour\u2019s cigar crackdown threatens &#8216;to totally wipe out&#8217; Britain\u2019s 140-year-old trade &#8211; London Business News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"102\" data-end=\"324\">Tobacconists have warned that a new plain-packaging regime could wipe out Britain\u2019s specialist cigar industry, forcing family businesses to close and potentially rendering millions of pounds of vintage stock worthless.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"547\">Ministers are considering extending cigarette-style plain packaging and graphic health warnings to cigars, a move that traders say would dismantle an industry built around craftsmanship, heritage and distinctive branding.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"549\" data-end=\"746\">The proposals would strip traditional handmade cigar boxes and bands of centuries-old artwork and branding, affecting an estimated 120 specialist businesses, many of them small, family-owned firms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"895\">The campaign against the plans is being led by James J Fox, the 140-year-old London cigar shop whose customers have included Sir Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"1003\">Daniel Freeman, its director, told The Telegraph: \u201cFrom the day it comes in, we will become unprofitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1142\">He said the cost of repackaging imported cigars would make premium products commercially unviable, while <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/beyond-off-the-shelf-how-custom-software-solutions-drive-business-innovation\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51213\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">driving customers<\/a> to buy abroad.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1204\">\u201cPlain <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/why-are-stand-up-pouches-the-main-attraction-in-the-packaging-industry\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51215\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">packaging<\/a> will instantly kill the industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1338\">Jemma Freeman, chairwoman of Hunters and Frankau, the UK\u2019s sole distributor for Cuba\u2019s Habanos SA cigar brands, was even more stark.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1419\">She said the measures would \u201cend this <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/a-third-of-small-businesses-keen-to-take-on-staff-before-end-of-the-year\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51214\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">business<\/a> in between three to five years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1462\">\u201cIt will be a total wipe-out,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1464\" data-end=\"1711\">The threat extends beyond retailers. Edie Sahakian, whose father fled Iran during the revolution before establishing Davidoff of London in 1980, said the proposals could destroy the <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/new-iht-rules-risk-dry-tax-bills-and-future-disputes-for-family-businesses-warns-irwin-mitchell\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51210\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">family business<\/a> before it could be passed to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1829\">Mr Sahakian said: \u201cIf this plays out, there will be no business to pass on. It\u2019s the end, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/starmer-on-the-brink-as-labour-braces-for-election-day-humiliation\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51209\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">game<\/a> over in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1999\">He said the regulations would also force the company to repackage millions of pounds\u2019 worth of rare vintage cigars held in storage, potentially making them \u201cworthless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2001\" data-end=\"2157\">Laurence Davis, owner of Sautter Cigars, warned that stripping legitimate <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/how-to-create-custom-release-notes-templates-for-your-product\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51216\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">products of their distinctive packaging could create<\/a> a bonanza for counterfeiters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2247\">Labour was \u201cgiving the world of cigar forgery the opportunity to just go wild\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2305\">The Government insists no final decision has been taken.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2594\">A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: \u201cWe are currently consulting on plain packaging requirements for all tobacco products, as part of our effort to tackle a habit that <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/windsor-and-maidenhead-leads-uks-green-fleet-transition-while-rural-authorities-remain-diesel-dependent\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51217\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remains the single leading<\/a> causes of preventable death, disability, and ill health in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2596\" data-end=\"2792\">\u201cAll stakeholders, including specialist tobacconists, have been encouraged to contribute to this consultation, and we will consider their responses carefully before any final decisions are taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2794\" data-end=\"2905\">The consultation <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/thousands-of-homes-without-power-following-storm-amy\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51211\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">follows powers<\/a> granted under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, originally introduced by Rishi Sunak.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2907\" data-end=\"3023\">The legislation received Royal Assent in April and prohibits anyone born after 2009 from legally purchasing tobacco.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3025\" data-end=\"3200\">For Britain\u2019s cigar merchants, however, the latest proposal threatens to go beyond restricting future consumption and into the destruction of an established <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/finaibox-highlights-gap-trading-as-a-specialist-strategy-for-active-market-participants\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51212\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">specialist market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3202\" data-end=\"3289\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Mr Freeman
