A proposed new city centre rooftop bar and restaurant<\/a> will put Derby \u201con the map\u201d, the city\u2019s leader has said.<\/p>\n Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council<\/a>, set out her vision for the future of Derby\u2019s Market Place after a \u201cmomentous\u201d developer contract deal was agreed.<\/p>\n Labour leaders of the city say the formal appointment of Vinci UK Developments and Ion Developments<\/a> as strategic development partners allows the authority to \u201ccrack on\u201d with major regeneration plans.<\/p>\n Huge changes are planned for the Market Place once the demolition of the Assembly Rooms<\/a> is complete \u2013 whenever that will be.<\/p>\n The abandoned building is expected to be replaced by several buildings including Derby MADE \u2013 a multi-use complex featuring a music venue, cultural \/ exhibition space, a young people and family library, and dedicated flexible working and meeting areas.<\/p>\n It could also include a rooftop bar and shops, according to previous reports.<\/p>\n Proposals also include the construction of Derby HOTEL \u2013 a four-star hotel, and Derby WORKS comprising Grade A office space.<\/p>\n Rooftop venue to put Derby \u2018on the map\u2019<\/p>\n Cllr Peatfield was asked if these proposals were what the people of Derby wanted.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cI am confident the mixed use (building) is the future.<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t see these huge buildings going up for just one thing, unless it\u2019s a performance venue like we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fact we are using part of it for commercial \u2013 it could be chain restaurants that people have wanted to see for a long time.<\/p>\n \u201cA rooftop restaurant \u2013 how attractive would that be for visitors and locals alike to be able to enjoy the view across Derby?<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a first for our city and it\u2019s something that will really put us on the map, along with other cities which have attractions like that.\u201d<\/p>\n Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield(Image: Derby Telegraph)<\/p>\n Cllr Peatfield also shared a vision of having a top class library in the Market Place. She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) she wanted it to be a \u201clibrary of excellence\u201d.<\/p>\n But crucially she said it was vital for the regeneration to become a place people can stay for long periods and be safe.<\/p>\n Ms Peatfield added: \u201cIt\u2019s vital we have spaces in the city that feel safe and spaces that are affordable or free. There is not enough of that around the city to encourage you to stay all day.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why the Market Hall investment was so important \u2013 because that is another one of those safe and free places. People do use it \u2013 they even go there on their own and feel safe.<\/p>\n \u201cOur museums are another one of those spaces \u2013 so adding another space like that which is free and safe is really important for people to stay longer in between shopping and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018Homework done\u2019 on music venue plans<\/p>\n Concerns have been reported about the idea of a 400-capacity music venue within the Market Place. The owner of city centre music venue Hairy Dog Paul Keenan<\/a> said footfall was struggling.<\/p>\n Cllr Peatfield said the music venue would be commercially run and not directly by the council.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cIn terms of the music venue \u2013 we\u2019ve done our homework. We\u2019ve looked at all the sizes of venues across the city. Speaking to Vaillant Live, there venue can house performances and audiences from the thousands upwards.
