Previous Barclays research also found that 85% of owner-occupied homes in England and Wales contain at least one spare bedroom, suggesting potential capacity within existing housing stock if downsizing barriers \u2014 including high transaction costs and a shortage of suitable properties \u2014 were addressed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jatin Patel of Barclays\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0376_639150571040923992.png\" style=\"height: 30%; width: 30%; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; float: right;\"\/>&#8220;New homes are critical to easing tension in the housing supply, but attitudes towards development are nuanced,&#8221; said Jatin Patel (pictured right), head of mortgages, savings and insurance at Barclays. &#8220;While UK consumers are broadly supportive of efforts to increasing housing supply, this has to be in step with investment in local infrastructure, healthcare and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpamag.com\/uk\/news\/general\/homes-near-stations-attract-higher-prices-in-major-uk-cities-nationwide\/550501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transport links<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Homeowners also need confidence that they can navigate the process of buying, selling and financing a move.
