{"id":110681,"date":"2026-08-25T12:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/110681\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T12:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:37:07","slug":"britain-bets-71m-on-critical-tungsten-mine-as-china-tightens-grip-on-strategic-metals-london-business-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/110681\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain bets \u00a371m on \u2018critical\u2019 Tungsten mine as China tightens grip on strategic metals &#8211; London Business News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"340\">Britain is to invest up to \u00a371 million in reopening a tungsten mine in Devon, in a move ministers say will strengthen the country\u2019s defence, energy and aerospace industries and reduce reliance on China for a strategically important mineral.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"342\" data-end=\"578\">The Hemerdon tungsten and tin mine on the outskirts of Plymouth will receive backing from the National Wealth Fund, giving the Government a 7% stake in the project for \u00a336 million and a further \u00a335 million towards restarting production.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"580\" data-end=\"783\">Ministers will also have the right to ringfence half of the mine\u2019s output for British use, potentially securing a domestic supply of a metal considered critical to advanced manufacturing and defence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"948\"><a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/jp-morgan-boss-warns-the-chancellor-that-higher-bank-taxes-could-drive-capital-abroad\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51339\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Healey<\/a>, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: \u201cWe are living in a more dangerous world, which is why backing British industry is more important than ever before.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"979\">\u201cThat is what this deal does.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1077\">\u201cWe are tapping into one of the largest deposits of tungsten in the world, right here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"1217\">\u201cThis investment will supply vital minerals to British defence, energy and aerospace businesses \u2013 and keep good, well-paid jobs in the UK.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1355\">\u201c(This is) all part of this Government\u2019s commitment to drive growth in every postcode, back <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/british-businesses-preparing-to-take-a-hit-from-chancellors-budget\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51346\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British business<\/a> and keep our country safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1516\">Tungsten is prized for its exceptional hardness and resistance to heat, making it important across machinery, electronics, aerospace and defence manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1827\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/hedge-funds-shift-to-the-yen-as-a-safe-haven-amid-us-china-tariff-tensions\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51341\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment<\/a> comes as Western governments seek to secure supplies of critical minerals amid growing tensions with China. Beijing dominates global tungsten production and introduced export restrictions in 2025, contributing to a sharp increase in prices during the <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/market-thoughts-choppy-trade-continues\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51345\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continuing trade<\/a> confrontation with the US.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"1942\">For Britain, reopening Hemerdon offers a rare opportunity to bring a strategic mineral supply chain back onshore.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"2197\">But the project also illustrates the difficulties involved in rebuilding domestic mining capacity. The mine ceased production in 2018 after its previous owner <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/a-major-retailer-enters-administration-with-more-than-1100-jobs-gone\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51347\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entered administration<\/a>, while Tungsten West warned in 2023 that it was approaching insolvency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2317\">The company subsequently sought government assistance after recording losses of more than \u00a310.3 million to March 2024.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2512\">The National Wealth Fund said the investment would support around 350 jobs, while the South West contains some of Britain\u2019s richest deposits of critical minerals, including lithium and tin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2514\" data-end=\"2636\">Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds described the deal as a \u201cvote of confidence\u201d in Britain\u2019s critical minerals industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2638\" data-end=\"2839\">Jeff Court, chief executive of Tungsten West, said: \u201cWe are incredibly pleased to welcome the UK Government\u2019s National Wealth Fund as a long-term equity partner in the development of the Hemerdon mine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2841\" data-end=\"2928\">\u201cHemerdon is a world class, low cost and long-life tungsten and tin resource in the UK.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"3124\">\u201cIt is extremely important to us that we prioritise UK requirements for this critical metal to support domestic demand, including strategic initiatives across defence and next <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/why-generating-energy-closer-to-where-its-used-matters-more-than-ever\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51343\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">generation energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3126\" data-end=\"3282\">\u201cHemerdon will be a long-term creator of economic benefits for the South West, including the generation of a significant number of direct and indirect jobs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3284\" data-end=\"3448\">\u201cThrough the support of the UK Government, we are ensuring that critical minerals produced at Hemerdon will underpin the UK\u2019s national interests for the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3450\" data-end=\"3625\">The Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/gold-prices-surge-as-trumps-bold-leadership-drives-economic-and-geopolitical-shifts\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51340\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment represents a broader shift in economic<\/a> policy: critical minerals are increasingly being treated not simply as commodities, but as strategic assets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3627\" data-end=\"3870\">With China controlling much of the global supply and <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/gold-trades-cautiously-amid-uncertainty-over-geopolitical-risks-and-trade-tensions\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51344\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geopolitical tensions disrupting established trade<\/a> routes, the ability to extract and process key materials domestically is becoming an increasingly important component of national security.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3872\" data-end=\"4095\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">For Hemerdon, the challenge now is turning that strategic importance into a commercially viable mine \u2014 and proving that <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/putin-leaves-britain-without-ambassador-as-war-tensions-escalate\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"51342\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Britain can once again produce the materials its defence<\/a> and industrial base increasingly depends
