It\u2019s been a fortnight since the partial solar eclipse<\/a> had London in a chokehold. People\u00a0flocked\u00a0to\u00a0the city\u2019s parks in their thousands, armed with elusive eclipse glasses or\u00a0colanders,\u00a0to lay their eyes on\u00a0a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event. If you want more where that came from, look up to the sky later this week to see\u00a0the partial lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0no coincidence that the two\u00a0events are happening in such quick succession. A lunar eclipse always\u00a0happens roughly two weeks before or after a solar eclipse. It\u2019s not quite as rare as the solar event, but nonetheless is a sight to behold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the eclipse reaches its maximum, the moon will appear deep coppery red, caused by\u00a0sunlight passing through our planet\u2019s atmosphere being scattered and\u00a0reflected back towards the moon. That\u2019s why the phenomenon is also often referred to as a \u2018blood moon\u2019. Here\u2019s everything you need to know if you want to catch the lunar eclipse this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What is a lunar eclipse?\u00a0<\/p>\n

A lunar eclipse is when the\u00a0moon passes through the\u00a0darkest part of Earth\u2019s shadow\u00a0(the umbra).\u00a0It happens around the world two to\u00a0four times per year but can only be seen from specific places once every\u00a0year and a half. Total lunar eclipses happen every two-and-a-half years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This week, we\u2019ll see a partial lunar eclipse in which around 93 percent of the moon will be within the umbra.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When is the August lunar eclipse?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The next partial lunar eclipse visible from the UK is on Friday August 28.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What will be the best time to see the lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll need to set your alarm for this one. The phenomenon will begin at 3.33am and reach its maximum at 5.12am.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where to see the lunar eclipse in London<\/p>\n

Most of the\u00a0major London parks will be shut at the time of the lunar eclipse, so\u00a0there\u2019s no point\u00a0heading to the likes of Primrose Hill or Greenwich Park.<\/p>\n

However Hampstead Heath is open 24 hours, so you will be able to get a good spot on Parliament Hill. The moon will get lower and lower on the horizon as the eclipse happens, so you should find a high point that has a clear, uninterrupted view to the southwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How\u00a0to\u00a0watch the lunar eclipse in London<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be glad to know that there\u2019s no need for any special glasses this time. We can look directly at the lunar eclipse without doing any damage to our eyes. It\u2019ll be worth sourcing some binoculars if you want a closer look at the moon\u2019s surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n
