ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Britain will maintain a “pragmatic relationship” with China on \u200ctrade while navigating the “sensitive” issue of how \u200cto reduce global imbalances, Chief Secretary to the UK Treasury Emma \u200bReynolds said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Reynolds told Reuters in an interview at the G20 finance leaders’ meeting in North Carolina that Britain maintains an open trading relationship with friendly \u200cnations while imposing strong \u2060sanctions and embargoes on Iran, Russia and other states that have started wars or \u2060are seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
“We have a pragmatic relationship with China, one where we cooperate on things \u200bthat we \u200bagree on, but also \u200bchallenge in areas where \u200cwe disagree,” Reynolds said. “The whole issue of global imbalances is quite a sensitive one and a tricky one, but it’s one that, we will we will navigate.”<\/p>\n
Asked if reducing global imbalances meant meeting U.S. Treasury \u200cSecretary Scott Bessent’s calls for \u200bG20 countries to consider more trade \u200bbarriers to Chinese \u200bgoods like the U.S. has done, Reynolds \u200csaid Britain would generally seek \u200bto maintain \u200bopen trade.<\/p>\n
“As a general rule, we are a very open trading economy, and we believe, sort \u200bof as a \u200cgeneral principle, that free trade is better than \u200bputting up barriers,” she said.<\/p>\n
