LONDON, Sept 3 (Reuters) – The leader of Britain’s left-wing Green Party intends to stand in an election for \u200ca seat in parliament vacated by former Labour prime \u200cminister Keir Starmer, a local newspaper reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Zack Polanski told the \u200bCamden New Journal he would be the Green candidate for Holborn and St Pancras, a left-leaning constituency which Starmer held comfortably in 2024 though with a much-reduced vote share.<\/p>\n
“Labour stands up for \u200ccorporations and big money,” \u2060Polanski posted on X. “I’ll stand up for people and our communities.”<\/p>\n
In an election two years ago, \u2060an independent candidate who campaigned primarily on opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza took nearly 19% of the vote while the \u200bGreen candidate \u200breceived over 10%, giving the \u200bparty hope of taking the \u200cseat this time.<\/p>\n
Since Polanski became Green leader a year ago the party has had success in taking support from Labour’s left, winning a surprise by-election victory in Greater Manchester \u2013 where current Prime Minister Andy Burnham was a long-serving mayor \u2013 and nationally \u200cpolling as high as 20%.<\/p>\n
But Polanski’s \u200bpersonal popularity took a hit after \u200bhe criticised police officers \u200bfor the way they arrested a man who \u200callegedly stabbed two Jewish people \u200bin north London \u200bin April, according to pollsters YouGov.<\/p>\n
A national YouGov poll on Wednesday put Labour tied with the right-wing populist Reform \u200bUK party of \u200canti-Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage on 23% with the opposition \u200bConservatives on 20% and the Greens on 13%.<\/p>\n
