{"id":117164,"date":"2026-09-04T01:04:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T01:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/117164\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T01:04:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T01:04:10","slug":"more-than-70000-pints-worth-of-guinness-stolen-from-english-depot-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/117164\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 70,000 pints worth of Guinness stolen from English depot \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The famous tagline \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/guinness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/guinness\">Guinness<\/a> is good for you\u201d applies only when the drink is bought and paid for, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">English<\/a> police have said, after thieves made off with more than 70,000 pints worth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Officers believe two lorries were driven into a depot in Runcorn, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liverpool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liverpool\">Liverpool<\/a>, on Monday, each attached to a waiting trailer holding a combined total of about 800 barrels before being driven away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cheshire police are hoping for a full recovery of the stolen barrels and have appealed for witnesses who may have seen a lorry entering the Aston Lane area at about 7.45pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first lorry was said to have connected to the HGV trailer before leaving the depot at about 7.55pm in the direction of the Mersey Gateway bridge. The second lorry arrived at the same site at 9.12pm and connected to another trailer before leaving at 9.30pm in the direction of Rainhill and Watkinson Way, police said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"One of the two stolen HGV trailers. Photograph: Cheshire Constabulary\/PA Wire <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Det sgt McClatchy said: \u201cIt is famously said that \u2018Guinness is good for you\u2019, but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is with this in mind that we have wasted no time in launching inquires to identify those responsible for the theft of \u00a3115,000 [\u20ac133,000] worth of Guinness and the two trailers that housed the barrels. We will settle for nothing less than the full recovery of all the items stolen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs part of our investigation into fully establishing what has occurred, we are now appealing to anyone who has any information in relation to the theft to please come forward and speak to officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe would also ask any motorists who were driving in the area at the time of either of the incidents to please review any dashcam footage to see if you have captured anything that could aid our investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The stolen barrels, containing about 70,400 pints of Guinness, had been intended to be delivered to pubs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/diageo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/diageo\">Diageo<\/a>, which owns the brand, has a packaging warehouse on the Whitehouse Industrial Estate on Aston Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Police believe both HGVs were driven by men. The first driver was described as white with a short dark beard and he was wearing a beanie hat. The second was believed to have been wearing a cap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The trailers were described as white tri-axle curtain side trailers with branding for logistics company GXO on curtains and rear doors.
