{"id":117956,"date":"2026-09-05T01:31:52","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T01:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/117956\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T01:31:52","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T01:31:52","slug":"london-listed-oil-firm-faces-sell-off-over-milei-falklands-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/117956\/","title":{"rendered":"London-listed oil firm faces sell-off over Milei Falklands threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tFriday 04 September 2026 10:51 am\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2263770682.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Javier Milei speaking passionately at a podium, gesturing with his right hand, in a formal setting.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tMilei said the oil field is a &#8220;clear danger&#8221; (Tomas Cuesta\/Getty Images)\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rockhopper, an London-listed oil exploration firm, is battling to slow an investor sell-off after Argentina\u2019s president vowed to sanction any oil companies working near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people-and-organizations\/falklands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Falkland Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a national address, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people-and-organizations\/javier-milei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Javier Milei<\/a> emphasised Argentina\u2019s claim over the British territory and promised to sanction any oil companies working there as part of the \u201cBritish occupation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shares in Rockhopper, which is working with partner Navitas on the Sea Lion oil field north of the Falklands, fell more than 10 per cent to 69p in early trading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milei singled out the Sea Lion oil project, describing it as a \u201cclear and present danger\u201d to Argentina\u2019s claim to the islands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we do not act swiftly in a few months, they will have the material capacity to access the oil that lies underneath our sea. Something that has never happened before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rockhopper and Navitas rushed to soothe investor fears, insisting that they do not expect Argentina\u2019s threats to have a \u201cmaterial effect\u201d on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/rockhopper-falklands-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">delivery of oil<\/a> from the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oil firms said: \u201cThe partnership operates pursuant to valid petroleum licenses lawfully granted to it by the Government of the Falkland Islands, a self-governing UK Overseas Territory, and with the full and ongoing support of the UK Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe partnership believes that the recent developments are not expected to have a material effect on the development activities of the Sea Lion Project, including the timetable for completion of the Project\u2019s development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rockhopper, which is based in Salisbury, has said it expects to start delivering oil from the Sea Lion project at the start of 2028. It has contributed $350m (\u00a3259m) in debt to the project and owns 35 per cent of the venture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Miliband: UK claim to Falklands \u2018unwavering\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milei\u2019s hotly-anticipated address has ramped up tensions between Argentina and the UK, whose control over the territory was last threatened during the 1982 Falklands War.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/we-have-not-delivered-bp-offloads-us-biogas-business-days-after-north-sea-exit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">North Sea is not competitive, says BP boss days after exit<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controversy over the islands returned to relevance earlier this summer, when a number of Argentinian footballers were condemned for holding up a banner supporting their country\u2019s claim to the Falklands after their semi-final victory against England at the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Falklands are Argentinian. Historically and legally. There can be no argument. They are part of the Argentine territory,\u201d the President said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe islanders on their usurped territory do not have a legitimate right to self-determination and any argument on any such self-determination is invalid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK government was quick to condemn Milei\u2019s comments. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the UK\u2019s ownership of the Falklands is \u201cunwavering\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wrote on X: \u201cThe Islands are British and will remain so because that is the overwhelming position of the Islanders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir right of self-determination is paramount, grounded in international law and we will resolutely uphold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said Britain\u2019s commitment to the territory is \u201cabsolute and unshakeable\u201d. Milei\u2019s statement \u201ctells us more about domestic politics in Argentina than it does about the Falklands Islands,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Binns, a partner at BCL solicitors and a sanctions specialist, said that the legitimacy of Milei\u2019s threat against Rockhopper is \u201cin the eye of the beholder\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe truth is that the power of sanctions, especially when they are unilateral, depends not on the merits of the cause but on the power of the state imposing them.
