The rules, effective upon receipt, incorporate EASA&#8217;s emergency directives of September 4 (2026-0172-E and 2026-0173-E) and require that, on twin-engine aircraft, no more than one affected part of the oil pump system remains installed.<\/p>\n<p>The documents do not order the grounding of the A330ceo or 777 Classic fleets, although compliance is mandatory immediately and special flight permits are prohibited (14 CFR 21.197 and 21.199). An aircraft may continue in service if the engine assignment is reconfigured so that it does not operate with two affected parts on the same airframe.<\/p>\n<p>Unsafe condition<\/p>\n<p>EASA describes the finding as &#8220;non-conformities associated with low oil pressure events in pumps with low accumulated time&#8221;, with a potential failure mode at the oil pump input coupling shear neck.<\/p>\n<p>In the justification for issuing the rule without prior consultation, the FAA frames the same risk in other terms: premature pump failure due to cracking of the internal rotor. Both wordings point to a loss of oil pressure and a possible in-flight shutdown; these documents do not present them as two independent root causes, nor do they publish a design-versus-manufacturing finding, a common P\/N across both families, or a single bulletin.<\/p>\n<p>If the condition is not corrected, EASA and the FAA agree on the worst-case scenario: dual in-flight shutdown (IFSD) on an aircraft with both engines affected and reduced aircraft controllability. The cited JASC code is 7261 (turbine engine oil system). The FAA qualifies both rules as an interim measure, but if a final action is defined later (replacement, repetitive inspection or another limitation), complementary or corrective rulemaking could be issued.<\/p>\n<p>Applicability<\/p>\n<p>AD 2026-18-51 \u2014 Project Identifier MCAI-2026-00950-T covers all RB211 Trent 768-60, 772-60 and 772B-60 engines. EASA also included the Trent 772C-60, but that model is not certified by the FAA nor listed on the US type certificate data sheet, so it falls outside the American AD. These engines are installed mainly on the Airbus A330-200 and A330-300, and also on the Beluga XL and the A330 MRTT.<\/p>\n<p>AD 2026-18-52 \u2014 Project Identifier MCAI-2026-00951-T applies to all RB211-Trent engines of the 875-17, 877-17, 884-17, 884B-17, 892-17, 892B-17 and 895-17 variants.<\/p>\n<p>These are the Trent 800 variants powering the first-generation Boeing 777-200, 777-200ER and 777-300 (777 Classic) and they do not affect the 777-300ER (GE90) or the 777X. Also outside the scope of the regulation are the Trent 7000 of the A330neo, the Trent XWB of the A350 and the Trent 1000 of the 787. The measure, therefore, does not reach the A330neo.<\/p>\n<p>Required actions and FAA exceptions<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the exceptions cited, the FAA did not draft its own procedure and requires compliance with all the actions and deadlines of the corresponding EASA emergency AD. Among those exceptions are the entry-into-force date (September 8, 2026, or the date of receipt of the US AD, whichever is later), the comments received by EASA and the exclusion of special flight permits.<\/p>\n<p>The EASA material summarized by the FAA describes de-pairing: on twin-engine aircraft with two affected engines, the engine assignment must be reconfigured so that no more than one affected part remains installed on the same aircraft. The criterion accordingly allows an aircraft that already operates with a single engine carrying an affected part, subject to EASA&#8217;s and Rolls-Royce&#8217;s deadlines and definitions. In these documents, &#8220;affected part&#8221; refers to EASA&#8217;s criterion on the oil pump and its coupling.<\/p>\n<p>In these two documents, the FAA does not list part or serial numbers, sets no cycle or hour thresholds, and does not reproduce the Rolls-Royce bulletin. It only adopts EASA&#8217;s actions and notes exceptions. The operational detail \u2014 which pump is affected, how it is identified, the deadline for de-pairing engines and which workshop instructions to use \u2014 is contained in the European emergency ADs (2026-0172-E and 2026-0173-E) and in the manufacturer&#8217;s technical material to which those ADs refer.<\/p>\n<p>That is no minor detail. The one who has to close compliance is not the journalist or the legal department: it is the organization that manages continuing airworthiness and the shop that works on the engine.<\/p>\n<p>In the EASA system, that organization is called the CAMO (Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation). It administers the maintenance program, tracks ADs, controls component life and decides which engine can be fitted on which aircraft. The shop (in Europe, a Part-145 organization) is the one that performs the task: it identifies the part, swaps an engine between airframes, records the work and releases the component.<\/p>\n<p>A CAMO may belong to the airline itself or be a contractor; the shop may be the company&#8217;s, Rolls-Royce&#8217;s or a third-party MRO&#8217;s. Neither can deem the US AD complied with using only the FAA document, because that text does not contain the parts list or the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>When the AD says that manufacturer instructions must be obtained, downloading a bulletin and applying it is not enough. Paragraph (j)(2) requires those instructions to be carried out under a method approved through one of three routes:<\/p>\n<p>the Manager of AIR-520, the FAA branch of Continued Operational Safety, which manages the in-service follow-up of already certified products;EASA, the authority of the State of Design of these engines;the Rolls-Royce Deutschland DOA (Design Organisation Approval). The DOA is the EASA approval that authorizes Rolls-Royce Deutschland to approve design data and certain technical instructions. If the route is the DOA, the approval must carry the authorized signature of that organization. Without that signature, the document does not qualify as a method accepted by the AD.<\/p>\n<p>If an operator cannot comply with the AD as written, it may request an AMOC (Alternative Method of Compliance). An AMOC is a case-by-case FAA authorization to comply with the AD through a path other than the prescribed one. It is approved by AIR-520 when requested under 14 CFR 39.19, and is channeled through the operator&#8217;s principal inspector or the responsible Flight Standards Office.<\/p>\n<p>To issue them upon receipt and without a comment round, the FAA invoked &#8220;good cause&#8221; under the Administrative Procedure Act, the law that normally requires a rule to be announced and comments received before it is published. The shortcut is justified here by the risk described: a dual in-flight shutdown (IFSD) on a twin with two affected parts. That is the legal reason for immediate effectiveness and for the ban on special flight permits.<\/p>\n<p>Operational impact and in the region<\/p>\n<p>The immediate consequence is not a grounding but an exhaustive review of engine logistics: operators must cross-reference which airframes carry two affected parts and reassign units so they are not paired together. In small fleets, the lack of an unaffected engine can leave a widebody out of service until the swap is completed.<\/p>\n<p>By engine type, the most visible long-haul fleets in Latin America are not covered by these models:<\/p>\n<p>Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas&#8217; A330-200s operate with GE CF6-80E1 engines.LATAM&#8217;s 777-300ERs operate with GE90 engines.<\/p>\n<p>It does apply to operators flying to the region with Trent 700-powered A330ceos or Trent 800-powered 777 Classics. One documented case: at least one A330-300 of Plus Ultra is listed with RB211 Trent 772B engines on routes to Lima and Buenos Aires.
