That\u2019s my dream. [But] your record is not illustrating a good set of policies. It\u2019s really indicating exactly what you see when [an] economy gets in the death spiral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have never heard of an economy being taxed into prosperity. What\u2019s happening is, Britain is taxing itself into death. Your problem is not too little revenue. Your problem is too little growth, too little prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laffer advised Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump on economic policy and is best-known for coining the \u2018Laffer Curve,\u201d a theory that income from taxes will fall once rates are raised too high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economist warned the Prime Minister that a fresh tax raid in next month\u2019s Budget would only worsen the perception that the government is losing its grip on the public finances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing costs surge<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global borrowing costs soared to record levels in recent weeks as investors acted on fears over inflation caused by the Iran war and rampant spending on artificial intelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soaring yields on government bonds first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/us-bond-market-jitters-spark-uk-economy-recession-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">rocked the US Treasury<\/a> in mid-August, pushing Treasury secretary Scott Bessent into an emergency measure to double the volume of government bond buybacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A borrowing costs rout hit the UK last week, as the yield on the 10-year gilt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/british-government-bond-yields-hit-fresh-18-year-high-oil-prices-rise-2026-09-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">soared<\/a> to 5.294 per cent \u2013 the highest level since the 2008 global financial crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bond rout threatened to overshadow the beginning of Andy Burnham\u2019s first parliamentary session as Prime Minister, prompting him to promise that his government would be \u201cgrounded in fiscal responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Jim O\u2019Neill, a former economic adviser to Burnham who turned down a formal role in his government, urged the Prime Minister to take immediate measures to soothe investor fears.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bond markets would respond positively if Burnham took \u201ccredible action to deal with the excesses of the triple lock or the excesses of welfare spending,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/economics\/article\/action-on-state-pension-triple-lock-would-calm-bond-market-tq50sqhg7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/britains-problem-isnt-too-much-thatcherism-but-too-little\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Britain\u2019s problem isn\u2019t too much Thatcherism, but too little<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
