{"id":118867,"date":"2026-09-06T21:33:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T21:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/118867\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T21:33:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T21:33:31","slug":"andy-burnham-warned-israel-sanctions-risk-british-national-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/118867\/","title":{"rendered":"Andy Burnham warned Israel sanctions risk British national security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andy Burnham has been warned that sanctions on Israel will risk British security by the new Shadow Foreign Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Tugendhat, a former Tory security minister, has told the Prime Minister that damaging diplomatic relations with the Jewish state could lead to harm for British citizens. <\/p>\n<p>He said that terror attacks on British soil had been avoided thanks to Israeli intelligence sharing information with UK security services.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burnham is set to announce a ban on trade with settlements in the West Bank as soon as this week.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tugendhat told The Telegraph: \u201cIt\u2019s worth remembering that Israel is one of our most important intelligence partners, and has been for many, many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you, as security minister, a lot of incidents did not happen because of co-operation with intelligence sources in Israel, who helped us to protect British people from terror attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, the first job of the British government is the protection of the British people, and one of the things I am absolutely clear on, is that leading Britain\u2019s foreign policy is about protecting our people first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burnham\u2019s plan has the potential to damage UK-Israel relations and hurt relations with Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"cab46\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"ffa2eb9bd2905005fb79e87ad9c75475\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20600%20337'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/andy-burnham.webp\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Andy Burnham\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Andy Burnham has been warned against imposing sanctions on Israel by the Shadow Foreign Secretary <\/p>\n<p> | GB NEWS <\/p>\n<p>The Shadow Foreign Minister said it was the job of the Foreign Office and the Prime Minister to put \u201cour own national interests and our own national security first, and that means that where we have friends and allies who provide us with intelligence in order to keep our citizens safe, we should work with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with putting electoral politics before national security is you find yourself in a situation where you risk both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said Argentina should be blocked from joining a free-trade agreement connecting 12 countries across the world after Javier Milei said Argentina would \u201cprevail\u201d and reclaim the Falklands Islands.<\/p>\n<p>He told GB News: &#8220;Weakness is provocative. Argentina, China, and Russia are proving why we must show strength on the world stage. Uniting all Britain&#8217;s strengths is what\u2019s needed to strengthen our foreign policy and serve our nation&#8217;s interests. That&#8217;s how we can protect the British people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Milei needs Britain as a friend. He wants to join the CPTPP to end his economic crisis. Britain can decide if we let him in. There is no better friend than Britain, but we cannot welcome those who threaten us as trade allies. Milei is banking on Britain\u2019s disunited foreign policy not serving in the interests of Britain and quietly letting him in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is about making foreign policy work in Britain\u2019s interest, uniting our country and delivering what matters to us. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As Foreign Secretary, I will put Britain\u2019s security first and bring diplomacy, trade, and military together to show strength, unity, and serve the British people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Ed Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, pledged a \u201ccomprehensive reset\u201d of relations with Israel as he announced that the Government would stop British companies \u201cfinancing, constructing or advertising new settlements.<\/p>\n<p>Gideon Sa\u2019ar, Israel\u2019s foreign minister, responded, warning that his country would retaliate against any further sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>He told the Israeli news website Ynet: \u201cIf Britain acts against the state of Israel, the state of Israel will act against Britain. We have tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli foreign ministry criticised Mr Miliband over a video released on Saturday night in which he made a series of claims about Israel\u2019s treatment of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, wrote on X: \u201cThe Brits have lost it.
