{"id":119175,"date":"2026-09-07T09:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T09:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/119175\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T09:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T09:44:13","slug":"jaguar-land-rover-jlr-to-cut-thousands-of-jobs-in-cost-saving-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/119175\/","title":{"rendered":"Jaguar Land Rover: JLR to cut thousands of jobs in cost-saving drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General view of Land Rover cars outside the Jaguar Land Rover factory on April 7, 2025 in Halewood, England.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Martin-roberts | Getty Images News | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of workers at Britain&#8217;s Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will be offered voluntary redundancies as the luxury car manufacturer responds to intense competition from cheaper Chinese rivals, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/29\/jaguar-land-rover-cyberattack-holds-ominous-lesson-for-british-firms.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cyberattack<\/a> and U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/06\/trump-tariffs-britains-jaguar-land-rover-suspends-us-shipments.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which is owned by India&#8217;s automotive manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TMPV-IN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tata Motors<\/a>, is planning to cut as many as 4,000 jobs over the next two years, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/jaguar-land-rover-4000-jobs-lost-vt3fsdt68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> from The Times.<\/p>\n<p>A JLR spokesperson did not comment on the scale of the job losses when contacted by CNBC on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson did, however, confirm the company had informed its colleagues and trade union partners that it is &#8220;opening a voluntary redundancy programme offering salaried and management team members the opportunity to leave the business.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>JLR said the company needed to adapt to evolving global market conditions while targeting roughly \u00a31.7 billion ($2.3 billion) in savings over the next two years, while reducing its break-even point to 300,000 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To achieve this, we must further simplify our organisation, improve efficiency, and build greater resilience,&#8221; the spokesperson said. <\/p>\n<p>Shares of Tata Motors traded 0.7% lower on Monday. The Mumbai-listed stock is up around 9.5% year-to-date. <\/p>\n<p>JLR&#8217;s cost-cutting drive is seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/19\/cnbc-uk-exchange-reflections-on-britains-tough-economic-reality.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fresh test<\/a> for Prime Minister Andy Burnham, following similar cost-saving announcements at British luxury car firms Aston Martin and Bentley in recent months. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/108216433-17612950581761295055-42244885586-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"JLR's cyberattack was the costliest in UK history - what happens now?\"\/><\/p>\n<p>U.K. Business and Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crer948xq00o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ruled out<\/a> a bailout for the company over the weekend, is expected to meet with JLR executives to discuss the redundancy measures early this week.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand that this will be an uncertain and concerning time for affected workers, their families and wider communities,&#8221; a government spokesperson told CNBC by email. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have taken significant action to back the UK automotive industry by lowering electricity bills for manufacturers, providing \u00a34 billion of capital and R&amp;D funding to manufacture zero emission vehicles and launching a \u00a32 billion Electric Car Grant to encourage people to buy EVs,&#8221; they added. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just British car firms feeling the pressure.
